They will always need each other.

And maybe they are destined to watch the world end together.

    Together.

At least they will be together.

    Summary

What he remembers is uninterrupted darkness and then Viktor, who shone. Viktor, who held him and cut his hair and made him a person again. He was nothing before that, all bleeding loss. The depth of his need was so awful, like clambering down into a mine. But Viktor followed him down into the dark and found him there, kissed him whole.

He traces a line between each mole with his mouth, making a map of the stars. He can feel Viktor humming under his lips, can taste the sounds of him, and his heart feels too full.

“Love you so much,” he mumbles, resting his hot cheek against Viktor’s skin. “My V.”

Viktor leans against him softly in the water, letting him take his slight weight; and maybe that’s the closest he can ever seem to come to saying it, or being carried.

Or: Viktor learns to be loved.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“You can’t imagine what it’s like,” he says. “To bloom into something terrible.”

But Jayce thinks he knows. The roots breaking through his heart, the moment he struck Viktor down. He can feel them now, their destroying fingers in his chest.

    Summary

When Viktor’s mother was dying, she planted a garden.

It was something simple, understandable, to draw her into life. To keep her there, maybe. It’s easier sometimes to live for something else, to keep something alive.

My garden, Viktor thinks, and strokes Jayce’s hair.

    Viktor’s been in Stillwater.

It hasn’t been easy on Jayce.

    Bookmarker's Notes

He didn’t realize it had been two years. Time means nothing to someone who has swallowed a thousand minds, inhabited the astral plane, spread himself across the arc of the world like a setting sun.

Jayce has been alone for two years, then—living in his mother’s house for months, unable to take care of himself, paralyzed by visions. Seared with them: his mind was left burned.

“I can’t believe you’re here,” he keeps repeating, and Viktor thinks part of it is yearning for someone who could understand. The only person who could understand.

“I’m scared,” Jayce whispers. “For you. All the time.”

    ”Jayce, no.”

”Your disease, your guilt, I never know which one is going to take you first.”
