You Didn't Say the Magic Word

Chapter 30: He Wants to Watch the World Burn...

Summary:

Dodgson is (uncharacteristically) nervous that Nedry won't be able to pull off the crime of the century, and that in the worst-case scenario, Hammond finds out about Nedry's betrayal. Nedry reassures him that he will succeed, and that crushing Hammond's dreams for Jurassic Park, gives him purpose in life.

Chapter Text

Prompt #30 "Crushing people's dreams is my sole purpose in life."

He Wants to Watch the World Burn… (and He Brought the Gasoline)

"That was Hammond's mistake?!" Lewis Dodgson repeated as he handed his credit card and Dennis Nedry's bill to the waiter at the outdoor restaurant in San José.

He wasn't surprised as he had previously targeted disgruntled employees. It didn't take a lot to convince them to break the law for Biosyn. Still, he made sure to maintain an even tone. He couldn't believe the nerve of Nedry. He had ordered all this food for himself—and was making Dodgson pay for it!

The waiter left and Dodgson faced Nedry who looked more serious than cheerful. His eyes were narrowed in concentration, and he appeared to be glaring at the Barbasol shaving cream can. Over the course of their conversation, Dodgson noticed that Nedry went from hilarious laughter to cold determination about committing the theft.

"Yup, and now that old bastard's gonna pay for it," Nedry replied as he picked up his spoon and played around with his food. "Hammond should've never underestimated me."

"You sure you know how to work the security?" Dodgson asked to be sure. "How to bypass it?"

Nedry rolled his eyes and threw down the spoon. "Yes, I know. We've been through this already. I designed everything for that damn park from the ground up."

The waiter returned with the bill and Dodgson's credit card. Dodgson quickly signed the bill and retrieved his card. Shortly after the waiter left their table, he resumed his conversation with Nedry.

"What if John Hammond finds out?"

Dodgson placed his credit card back in his wallet. It wasn't like him to overthink everything, but he wanted to be sure their plan worked. Biosyn was counting on Nedry's success so that they could catch up with InGen and compete against them in the field of genetic technology.

"Then he finds out," Nedry said, shrugging. "Don't sweat it, he'll never find out."

"Are you certain?"

"I know how to cover my tracks. He'll never know that one of his own employees backstabbed InGen to aid their competition."

Dodgson abruptly stood up from the table. He didn't want to spend too much time at the restaurant, because he didn't want anyone to remember him being there. Nedry must've been on the same wavelength as him because he stood up too.

"If he were to find out though…" Dodgson just wanted to cover his bases now. "Would it stop the park from opening to the world?"

Nedry burst out laughing. A full minute had passed before he answered Dodgson's question.

"Jurassic Park is Hammond's dream, and crushing people's dreams is my sole purpose in life!"

Notes:

I always wondered how the conversation between Nedry and Dodgson may've continued in the movie from when they met in the restaurant, and this was my take on it. The title of this fic was inspired by the song "World Burn" from the Mean Girls musical Broadway and movie soundtrack. Although it was never Nedry's intention to destroy Jurassic Park, and for his coworkers to get killed (or himself for that matter), I could see him still being pleased with himself if Jurassic Park never opened to the world. It would be his ultimate revenge against John Hammond.

Thank you for everyone who took the time to read my fics about Dennis Nedry and thank you to those who took the time to review/comment/bookmark/favorite/follow/kudo. I really appreciate it. Dennis Nedry isn't a popular character in the Jurassic Park fandom, despite his important role in the franchise. He's always been my favorite character, probably because I find his struggles as Hammond's employee realistic and relatable. It's said that "life imitates art" and "art imitates life". Right now, as I'm writing this last author's notes, I find myself relating to Dennis Nedry again, in that I'm disgruntled with my current work situation. Although I wouldn't go as far as Nedry did and risk death (mine or others') and incarceration, I will say that the frustration of being unappreciated and overworked is real. You can love your work, and still despise how you're treated by your place of employment. Thankfully, I make my exit at the end of this week.

Incidentally, 9/2/2024 is Labor Day in the United States, which is about celebrating workers. So, Nedry is a worker, I'm a worker, and many people work. It's fitting that I'm posting the last prompt/fic today. Thank you again, everyone!
