Chapter 7: Future

Chapter Text

Gus turned Luz and Amity’s save the date around in his hands, letting out a deep sigh. “Everyone’s getting married these days...,” he lamented, pinning it to the board where he kept important papers before tossing the rest of the junk mail they received and coming over to crash on the couch next to Matt.

“Was it at least a pretty invite?” Matt asked, reaching over to put a hand on the back of Gus’ head. “Luz doesn’t seem like the type to have a boring white wedding.”

“It’s got their pink trees on it,” Gus responded. “I just feel like I’m the one who’s lagging behind, now... I was always the top of my class. Feels bad to be a late bloomer.”

“Man, get over yourself,” Matt said, scoffing playfully. “Humble yourself for once.”

Gus turned his head to scowl up at him, his cheek pressed to the cushion. “You couldn’t even spell ‘humble’!” he protested.

Matt smirked and looked away. “I’m not even gonna humor you with that one,” he said. “But, like... What really bothers you about not getting married? You’ve got bigger things going on.”

Gus shrugged, turning his head back down into the couch. “Peer pressure, I guess.” His voice was muffled. “I have a fear of missing out.”

“I’ve noticed,” Matt said. “But it’s just a wedding. Big events are expensive to put on. Be glad you’re getting invited to a bunch of other peoples’ weddings. Have fun, and let everyone else foot the bill.”

Gus groaned. “I’m still jealous,” he admitted. “Always the last one to get in a relationship...”

Matt tapped his toes idly. “Well. I can’t help with that. But...” He pretended to look at a watch, despite not wearing one. “We’ve been living together for a few years now. Give it a little more time, and we’ll be common law married.”

Gus sat up and curled up into a tight ball from there, burying his face in his knees. “That’s still a couple years out... And we don’t even get a wedding out of that,” he whined softly.

“Only the cool kids get common law married,” Matt said. “You’re not even engaged to me. Why does it matter?”

“Not yet,” Gus murmured, still sitting curled into his legs.

Matt felt his face start to warm. It was easy to overlook their connection sometimes. They just felt like friends who happened to kiss on the lips sometimes. He didn’t feel like Luz and Amity did, but that didn’t dilute what they had at all. “Don’t propose here, man,” he said. “Where’s the showman in you? Do it someplace special, and not on the couch when you’ve got wedding fever.”

Gus took in a breath and let out a quiet chuckle. “Yeah, sure,” he said, leaning back and extending his legs out in front of him. “Gives me more time to plan.”

Matt tilted his head and smiled at him. “I’ll be wearing two pairs of socks from here out, ‘cause I know you’ll knock them right off.”
