Chapter Text
Hello! I've been drawing a lot! Particularly, I've been drawing a lot of the new characters introduced in ASHY: Volume 2. Today I'm gonna go over team BLOD's designs and some character stuff about them.
BASIL WATTS-CALLOWS
.
This is Basil. Basil's character inspiration is Sherlock Holmes. All of team BLOD take inspiration from British Literature. The coat that Basil is wearing is called an Inverness cape. Sherlock Holmes is typically depicted with this type of coat. Basil name comes from Basil Rathbone. He play Sherlock in 14 different Sherlock movies. Basil's fake last name of Doyle come from Arthur Doyle, the author of the Sherlock books. She is holding her one her hard-light scimitars here. The scimitars don't go back to Sherlock, but their form does as a magnifying glass/racket. Magnifying glasses are often associated with detectives. I chose Sherlock as her inspiration because if you look up Dr. Watts character inspiration, he's apparently inspired by Dr. Watson. That connects to her Father Arthur in that way.
Yes, she does call her bio dads Father First Name because she's not close to either of them so refers them formally and she was raised in the Salemist cult. It sound cult-ish to refer to someone as Father and their name.
No I'm not explaining how same-sex couple have bio children, magic exists. But I might explain how a digital conscience and scorpion had a child because I can see an interesting freaky science/cult answer to it.
Continuing on with fatherly connections, her other father is Father Tyrian. She has the braid that ends looking like a scorpion stringer, but her braid is a bubble braid. Each piece of her braid is a big circle. Her grimm mask is based on a death stalker, the scorpion grimm. I choose to give the Salemists grimm mask because I really like Raven's mask. I think it is the coolest thing. I wanted more characters with grimm mask like that. Since Salem is associated with the grimm, it was my chance. Even though I've drew Basil with her mask on, I still love it.
This is her outfit during the cargo train mission arc.
Fun Fact: She doesn't have a semblance.
LUCI GRIFFIN:
.
This is Luci. Luci's character inspiration is The Invisible Man. The original was first published in 1897 in a British periodical called the Pearson's Weekly and later in same year as a novel. Luci's last name of Griffin comes from main character of this book Griffin. Luci's semblance comes from this book as well, his passive invisibility.
For a quick explain of how I do semblance and aura, since the show likes adding and changing the rules over the years. Once someone unlock their aura, it acts as a passive shield. Aura can drain, typically with taking hits during fighting. Also, using your semblance use your aura. You can choose when you use your semblance. Once aura gets low, it shimmers. Once out of aura, it break/shatters. Once your aura breaks/shatters, you start taking damage. Once out of aura, you cannot use your semblance. Aura heals itself over time.
Passive semblances like Luci tend to break these rules. Luci's semblance doesn't use up his aura, but has no control over it. He is always invisible until his aura break. Only then, Luci is visible. Once his aura heals itself, Luci back to being invisible again, until aura breaks again. Also, Luci can make other things invisible besides himself, but that takes focus. That's how he made Basil's tail invisible that one time. He had cover for Basil more than a few times by now.
The name Luci means light. This name plays whole invisiblity, with the light spectrum: how is visible light human can and invisible light human can see. Luci's color is white because if combine all color visible light together you get white.
I gave him brown roots in his hair because I didn't want to make him look like a Schnee but I wanted him to have long white hair. I chose to use brown because I wanted a little color to a rather monochromatic design. Monochromatic designs can work, but it felt like something was missing from Luci.
The bandages around his arms and hands play into his backstory. Also, every time I look up the invisible man I see a man wrapped up in bandages. It also calls back to that.
OLIVINE POTTS:
.
This is Olivine. Olivine's character inspiration is Harry Potter. Her basilisk faunus idea comes from the basilisk in The Chamber of Secrets. Her faunus of trait being in her mouth comes from Parseltongue. Her hair is supposed to look like a snake's hood. The idea of the cloak comes from the invisibility cloak. Though it doesn't give her invisibility, I gave her cloak special properties of the wind and plant dust. Her color comes from the idea: What if Harry was in Slytherin. Her last name of Potts comes from Potter. Also, she has round glasses like Harry.
Side note, I've seen wind dust's color as either as light green or white, I've chosen light green. It's like what I've done with gravity dust I had chosen between black or purple and picked purple.
She does have a semblance: Repulsion. She can pushes things and people back. By itself it's a rather weak push. She can use it in combination with wind dust for something a bit strong, but typically the wind dust does a better job. She only really uses her semblance when she's really in danger. She can wind dust to move around the plants created by plant dust, a little bit. Most of her fighting is trying to trap opponents or get them out of the way. Out of all them BLOD, she's the one who doesn't want to cause lethal harm to anyone. That's gonna cause conflict later on.
She's trans. She's a trans girl. Why? Because I might like Harry Potter, but I don't really JK Rowling's opinions trans people. Also, I just wanted to.
She does have a scar on her forehead, it's not shown here because she only shows it off in her other outfit with her grimm mask and other cloak.
DANDELION "DANDY" CAPULET:
.
This is Dandy. Dandy's character inspiration is Juliet Capulet. Dandy's color is yellow with two accent colors being red and pale blue. The red is often associated with the Capulet family. The pale blue is the color of Dandy gender-bent Romeo in this story. Dandy's padded vest is sort of based on the time-period Romeo and Juliet takes place in.
I do describe Dandy's sleeves as pale yellow... it didn't look good. I colored over them with black. I think it looks better. Now all team BLOD are wearing black and kinda matching with each other.
Dandy's vials are based off the poison vials. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet drinks the sleeping potion while Romeo drinks the poison. I got some vile planned with these vials of compressed dust.
In the vials, there's a metal cable/wire that combined with compressed forms the dust lashes/whips.
The pouches and belts around Dandy's legs hold all his different vials and dust. He's the most practical dress out of all of them. That's funny because he has less practical dreams. Besides Basil, Dandy is most motivated to bring back Salem. I don't want to spoil my own story but: he took the wrong message from Salem's and Ozma's story.
