Chapter Text
After they had returned from the hunt, Helaena decided to walk the forest. She wanted some time to herself, knowing she wouldn't get any during her time in Volterra.
She came to a stop in the clearing near the ravine that separated Forks and La Push. She wasn't here in 1936 when her family and the Quileute's made the treaty. However, Carlisle had the foresight to add her name to it.
The tortured souls watched as the sun danced on the leaves. When it shined on her, her marble skin shined like a million diamonds.
If she closed her eyes, she could almost imagine basking in the light's warmth and dancing with her children.
"Join us, mama!" The wind seemed to sing, "Join us! Be happy!"
How she wished she could. She wished to be reunited with her sweet Vaelon and Vaella. She wished to hold them, to tell them she loved them more than anything on this Earth.
That she would continue to love them for as long as she lived.
The breeze picked up and lightly picked up her hair. With it, it brought an unfamiliar scent,
Helaena didn't react, instead she continued to watch the trees dance in the wind and listen to the birds singing. It was most likely one of the wolves that had phased. They probably had caught her scent and decided to make sure she wouldn't cross the ravine onto their side.
She knew of three that had phased so far.
How awful it must be to be forced to change into something... unnatural. She could relate all too well.
Twigs and branches snapped as the wolf ran towards her. Its scent was like nothing else she had ever smelled in her 450 years as a vampire. It wasn't bad, in fact, it didn't even make her thirsty.
Perhaps because she just feasted on black bears.
Finally, the wolf broke through the treeline. It came closer to the edge and growled at her.
"I'm not crossing the treaty line." Helaena told it softly, "If I did, you would-."
The thought stopped her short.
Of course.
Why hadn't she thought of it before?
In order to finally get away from the one that made her, to finally reunite with her children... all she had to do was cross the treaty line.
She finally turned to the wolf, her mind made up. To her surprise, the wolf was massive with dark silver fur and very dark eyes.
Helaena locked eyes with the wolf and it whimpered. It then shook itself out and growled but it broke off. She took a step closer to the treaty line.
When the wolf didn't do anything, she took two steps closer. She was now on the edge of her side.
Just a few more steps and she would be with her children again.
"Helaena!" A voice shouted form behind her
She ignored the voice and took another step.
Suddenly, she had strong arms wrapped around her from behind, preventing her from falling. Whoever it was had the upper hand as they gathered her in their arms and ran.
Ran away from the wolf.
Ran away from her chance at peace.

It was Edward who had condemned her. Helaena figured it made sense. Alice most likely saw her decision and sent Edward to stop her.
Once she was deposited on the couch in the living room, Rosalie immediately brought her into a hug, "Do not ever do that again!" the younger vampire told her sister
"I could have been free." Helaena replied as she returned the hug
Rosalie's arms were one of the places she felt the safest. Emmett and Jasper's arms were safe places too.
The younger vampire nodded against her shoulder, "I know."
If anyone understood, Rosalie and Esme understood the best. Hell, Esme jumped off a cliff.
She looked and met Edward's eyes, "Why?" She asked
Edward looked stricken, "What do you mean why?" He questioned, "You're my sister." He said as if that should be reason enough
Before anyone could chime in, the phone rang. Everyone exchanged a look and Carlisle got up to answer it.
"Hello?" he said
Helaena didn't bother listening to the phone call. She needed some other way to end it before Demetri came to collect her.
Carlisle came back into the room with a troubled look on his face, "Tomorrow morning, Helaena and I are going to meet with the Quileute wolves."
"Why?" Emmett asked, unsettled at the thought of his sister that close to their natural enemies in this state
"There has been a development." The Cullen Patriarch told his family
Great. Wonderful. Helaena thought to herself

The next morning, it was decided that Jasper would come along to the meeting. With his gift, he could calm everyone down if needed.
Carlisle, Helaena, and Jasper stood on their side of the treaty line waiting for the wolves.
"They didn't tell you why they wanted to meet Lae?" Jasper asked
Carlisle shook his head, "I assume it has to do with yesterday."
"I didn't cross." Helaena said
Edward had made sure of that.
Just like yesterday, twigs and branches snapped as the wolves ran towards the treaty line. Two wolves showed themselves.
There was a solid black one and the silver one from yesterday.
They then backed up into the forest and sounds of bones shifting and clothes rustling were heard.
Two Quileute men stepped out from behind the trees. The taller of the two radiated authority, his posture rigid and unyielding. The seeing was a shorter man whose muscles coiled like a predator ready to strike. His face was hard, guarded.
"Thank you for coming." The taller one told them, "I'm Sam Uley, the current alpha, and this is my third in command, Paul Lahote."
Carlisle stepped forward, "I'm Carlisle. This is my son, Jasper, and my daughter, Helaena."
The two sides fell silent, both kinds observing one another. Helaena shifted nervously in response to the heaviness of the silence.
"What was the development that you wanted to talk about?" The Doctor vampire asked politely
"I imprinted on Helaena." Paul said bluntly
Helaena didn't know what that was. She looked at Jasper, who shrugged his shoulders.
"I don't know what that is." She told the shifter
Paul looked at Sam, who nodded, "It's... an involuntary way for the shifters to find their soulmate."
The oldest vampire present felt dread settled in.
OhgodOhgodOhgodOhgodOhgodOhgodOhgod.
The king would kill him.
"No." She panicked and started backing away, "Nononononono."
With that she ran.
