Chapter 2: Welcome to R.E.D

Chapter Text

It was a big surprise that Y/N made it through the week with all the bad news coming one behind the other, her boss got her to stay living at the dinner while she figured out something to at least keep her visa intact, and in compensation, Y/N worked even harder, doing any errand they asked for since she felt in debt. And on today’s queue the next thing was groceries shopping.

The nearest town was somewhat ‘’special’’, teufort was full of ignorants, even mentally ill people, so you just gotta think a little to get your way around town, that’s at least what her boss told her. Honestly, the people there were noticeable unstable, thing that Y/N found somewhat concerning, making her wanting to keep her distance from the people living there, the only good thing about that town were the really low prices on their products.

Y/N’s list basically included items like 3 egg cartons, milk, bacon, only stuff to keep the dinner’s kitchen full. So, grabbing an old truck from one of her co-workers and the list they gave her, she made her way to teufort. Letting aside all her problems, she took advantage of the desert road, driving with the windows down at a considerable speed, feeling the breeze shooing away her troubles, at least for an hour and a half while she made her way there. Looking out of the window, into that big desert, she could see some debris, broken cars with stuff that seemed like bullet marks, who on earth would practice aim with this burning weather?

Finally arriving town, driving around the street, all the people seemed to hide on their houses as she was passing by.

‘’Man, why these people have to be so... weird?’’

Most of the windows were covered with some kind of flyers, but the people didn’t seem to mind that much about them, and at that distance she couldn’t actually understand what they said either.
The supermarket was kind of empty, so grabbing the groceries didn’t took long, the cashier had a weird smile stuck on his face, man they were creepy.

While paying for the groceries, she gave a quick look to the market’s window, seeing the same flyers covering most of the window, and walking a little closer she finally figured out what they had written on.

‘’Reliable Excavation Demolition needs YOU! In search for someone qualified to care and assist a certain group of people in health and nutrition matter. Shelter and food guaranteed while working with us, for more information call: xx-xxx-xxx’’

‘’…’’

Could an offer like this actually be real? Isn’t it too much of a coincidence to be in such a need, to find someone that specific? She’s not falling for this thing; it has to be a scam.
That’s what she told herself, as she ripped one of the flyers, saving it on her pocket before making her way to the truck again.

On her way ‘’home’’, she couldn’t stop thinking about the flyer, how could she trust this random flyer on THAT crazy town? Even though it’s exactly what she needs, being a parasite on that woman’s dinner feels wrong, Y/N was already used to fix her own problems so receiving help just felt wrong, even more since it felt so important.
Already on the small storage room she was using temporally as a room, she was sitting on an old couch, analyzing the flyer on one of her hands, and her phone with the number already written on it, her trembling finger resting above the call button, and with a sigh, she called.

The dial tone, then the voice from the other side, but she didn’t spoke, unsure of the whole thing, and thinking better about it, she hanged the phone without saying a word, leaving her phone on her side and laying on the couch to get some sleep.

The week went on normally, working at the dinner and extra hours to compensate her guilt, cleaning, cooking, and nothing unusual went on, until Saturday night.
The dinner was empty, most of the staff were on their own thing because of the lack of clients, and Y/N was just cleaning the tables, getting ready to close the dinner.

As she was cleaning, the door from the dinner opened, and a thin, black-haired lady walked in with a serious expression, she was wearing a purple dress and she had a brown suitcase on her hands. Scanning the room, she finally laid her eyes on Y/N, and without hesitation, she approached her.

‘’Y/N Y/L?’’ She said, still with the serious face. Y/N only nodded slowly, with a confused face.

‘’Alright, you can call me ‘Miss Pauling’, one of R.E.D employees and assistant of the Administrator of the company, we received your call.’’

Y/N only got more confused when the woman mentioned the call, the call where she said absolutely nothing, she left the plates on the table to face the woman properly.

‘’Call? Uh i- I didn’t actually postulate for that job.’’

‘’If you called that number, you also noticed the small letters under it on the flyer’’ Miss Pauling pointed at the flyer on her hand, that indeed had small letters on it, small letters that were almost the same color as the flyer background, and which basically stablished a compromise if you called said number. Without words, Y/N only stared at the woman, expecting her to keep talking.

‘’We checked your background, residence and references, and you do qualify for our job, we require you on our installations at tomorrow morning, specifically 7am. You will be assigned an uniform, tasks and we’ll introduce you to the group of people under your care’’

‘’Wait, background? Residence? I didn’t even said my name!’’

‘’We have our contacts, and you, from what I see on this document here... you have no other options than cooperating, either way you can enjoy your trip back to your country.’’ Another document on her hand, this time it was a document with her time left with her legal student visa, something they could totally use at their advantage if they wanted to. Y/N swallowed dry, shutting her mouth and looking into that woman face with resignation.

‘’We appreciate your cooperation, have a good night, Miss Y/N. And one more thing...’’ She required her to sign a paper, making that interaction something she couldn’t talk about, and finishing trapping her on that job.

‘’Welcome to R.E.D’’ Said Miss Pauling, walking out of the dinner.
