I have a confession to make: I never saw Carlando in action at McLaren

I had several hiatus watching F1. In my childhood (when Schumacher won everything), every Sunday lunch was accompanied by the sound of F1 cars (my mother hated it and always asked to mute the TV). At the time, F1 was broadcast on a free public channel, but after some years, they decided to switch to cable TV (I never had cable TV. Yes I never saw Cartoon Network) and we stopped watching.

A few years later, in the era of Sebastian Vettel/Mark Webber in Red Bull, my brother went back to watching F1 on some unofficial sites (if you know what I mean. VPNs…) and I saw some races. To be totally honest, I couldn’t watch a whole race, I found it boring, but I had a crush on Webber šŸ˜…. However, my brother got tired of watching the races with poor video quality, so stopped watching again (and so did I).

He started watching again a few years back with the rise of F1 TV (yes, HE SAW CARLANDO IN ACTION AND NEVER TOLD ME ANYTHING). I wasn’t that interested because he watched the races on the computer/iPad, and for me, that’s too small. However, this year he managed to put it on TV (thanks Apple TV) and I finally started to watch F1 with enthusiasm (and watching an entire race from start to chequered flag). My brother says it was the best season for me to start watching F1 again and that maybe I’ll get spoiled (thanks Max, Lewis and FIA šŸæ).

When I become interested in something, I start searching everything related, so I began watching videos from the F1 YouTube channel, and oh hello, Carlos Sainz Jr šŸ˜. Searching for Mr. Smooth Operator, I ended up finding McLaren’s challenges and fell in love with Carlando.

So yeah, I’ve never seen Carlando in action (at McLaren). That’s why I make so many posts of them. For me it’s not a ā€œblast from the pastā€, it’s a recent discovery.

PS: No, I never saw Drive to Survive.

I think the first time Carlos and Lando played a sport—golf or padel or even bowling—together, Lando was really nervous. A part of him was still really nervous about Carlos’ perception of him, feeling like it was hanging by a thread (not knowing, of course, that Carlos was absolutely enamored with him). Plus, Carlos just seemed like an absolute athletic specimen, who would coldly succeed and roll his eyes at Lando.

So imagine Lando’s shock when Carlos met him at a glow in the dark bowling alley and screamed, ā€œAy dios, por que?!ā€ at the heavens when he absolutely whiffed his first strike. Imagine Lando’s surprise when Carlos started yelling, ā€œNo, no, no, NO, TO THE LEFT, TO THE LEFT, TO THE- LANDO I AM TRYING TO HELP- LAAANDOOOO,ā€ in an effort to confuse Lando, only to collapse dramatically onto the floor when Lando got a spare.

Imagine Lando’s delight when, after finally getting the strike he had been threatening to get all game, Carlos cawed like an eagle and flapped his way over to Lando, assailing him with ā€œhis wingsā€ until Lando found himself shrieking in kind. It took a very patient attendant clearing their throat for Lando to push Carlos off himself. They were both disheveled, a mess, and mildly embarrassed—but when Lando caught sight of Carlos’ broad, happy grin, his hand extended in a silent offer of assistance, that’s when it finally hit him.

So Lando took Carlos’ hand and yanked him back down onto the ground, before clambering onto him and pretending to pummel him anew. After all: Carlos—his surprise morphing into joy—really was his friend.
