he longs for a day to come when he will wear the mask and dance — not to conquer demons, but to the tune of that flute amid a sea of flowers.

I've been thinking a lot about Kageyama's mindset when he first meets Hinata and when they first start playing volleyball together.

Even at Kageyama's most demanding and unreasonable (playing on his middle school team), we really don't see him be as harsh with anyone else as he is with Hinata.

Panel from Haikyuu manga, chapter 1: Kageyama is talking to his teammates from kitagawa daiichi middle school: "You three. None of you even managed to earn a spot on the bench and you think you're good enough to talk smack about our opponent? Quit slinging the school's rep around like it's your own."ALT
Panel from Haikyuu manga, chapter 1: Kageyama yells at a teammate: "How many times to I have to tell you?! You have to move faster for a quick set!". His teammate says "Sorry." Watching from across the net, Hinata's friends say: "Yikes! He's good, but I don't think I wanna be on his team." "Me neither."ALT

Caption: Kageyama is bluntly honest about his teammates not being good enough to make it off the bench, and he shouts instructions on the court - but he's not calling people names or antagonizing them in the same way he does with Hinata.

But, at the same time, Kageyama starts out, from day 1, taking Hinata more seriously than anyone else does.

Panel from Haikyuu manga, chapter 1: Hinata: "C'mon, we're going back." Hinata's friend: "?! What about your queasy gut?" Hinata: "It got better!" Friend: "Huh?!" "Still, that guy you were talking to... He seemed, I dunno, different from all the other guys." Hinata: "How?!" Friend: "Just about everybody here has totally blown us off...except him. He took you seriously."ALT

So what's going on? What's with this attitude from Kageyama (that extends through the high school arc) that's so unique to how he views Hinata?

I think Kageyama has his hopes up about Hinata from the very beginning, and that really scares him.

I feel a little crazy every time I remember Furudate gave Kagehina contrasting birthdays (summer/winter solstice), the yin&yang hidden in their names, first characters of their first names forming the word hishou ("soar"), constant light/dark imagery, constant talk about destiny, fate. "Somebody who's even better will come and find you."

And then I'm like, was any of that necessary? For a volleyball manga? Or did Furudate just want to make sure everyone knew they're soulmates.

furudate was so insane for this. kagehina deniers can’t even dispute the source material when the truth that they’re soulmates is literally being shoved in our faces

i just finished “ali roma’s on the case” and i just want to say that it’s one of the best POV outsider fics i’ve read 😭 also i just wanna know if it’s really done since it’s 7/9 chapters on ao3 ? thank you !!!

Hiiiii sorry for the late response!

Ali Roma’s on the case is NOT finished yet :) I have one more main story chapter to wraps things up and then a (potential) epilogue chapter from Kageyama’s POV to round out the story. (Side tangent, but I’m considering changing the chapter count to be out of 8, that way the main story shows up as complete but I can go back and add the epilogue whenever I feel like) ANYWAYS.

Ik it’s been a REALLY long time since I posted chapter 7 and I feel really bad about it hvkjhdkjhkj everyone has been so nice about my fic and I’m just making everyone wait BUT DON’T WORRY I am SO close to being done w the latest chapter it just needs a few rounds of edits and it’ll up soon!

Also: The best outsider POV fic you’ve read?? jfhgkjdhgk omg thank you that’s such high praise I feel honored! Please take this snippet from my drafts as a thank you for your patience:
