was really excited to see “eager” on your book list! i’m reading it right now and was recommended it after doing some beaver habitat restoration volunteer work, excellent read so far :D i would love to hear your thoughts on the book if you’re interested in sharing!

So, full disclosure, I have read some but not all of Eager because I was assigned parts of it for a class on nature and politics, but I put it on the list anyway because I really liked the parts we read! I’ve been meaning to sit down and read the rest of it one of these days though.

Some of the book’s points were already quite familiar to me, because I’ve been a nerd about beavers since I was a little kid – they’re among my favorite animals, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve been delighted to learn about the various ways they benefit the environment, too. Beaver reintroduction is also often my go-to topic in biology classes when tasked with deciding on a paper or project topic. As a result though, I feel reasonably like I can say Goldfarb does good journalism on the topic, being honest about some of the reasons there’s pushback to coexisting with beavers while also solidly coming out in favor of the little guys. I think the book also does a good job of describing the sheer impact a single keystone species can have, with lots of illustrative examples of how beavers – or their absence – can effect a landscape or an ecosystem.

It’s a nice piece of science/environmental communication on a fun and important topic and I’m glad it’s gotten a fair bit of attention! Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in the topic, also.

(And that’s very neat that you’ve done beaver habitat restoration volunteer work, I love that!)

My brain has not been working the best and I forgot to append a poll to my book list, but I’ve added one now!

Threw together another one of these lists because as it turns out, I personally have always read more book that I have watched movies or TV shows, so as far as personal picks go, this was definitely the better option.

There is very little rhyme or reason to this one – some are books that left an impression on me as a kid, some are current favorites, and some are academic reading related to my future PhD hopes. For longer series of books, I generally included either my particular favorites or let the first one stand in for the whole series.

Curious how many on here people recognize!

Å in Lofoten. A place that feels like the very end of the world.

hi! i made a letterboxd list from your tumblr's favorite movies list.

hope it doesn't bother you. i can always delete it :)

Absolutely does not bother me – I’ve seen some people in the tags wondering about one, although as I don’t use Letterboxd myself I haven’t made one of my own, so this is great!

On the whole I’m tickled people have been enjoying the list so much (even considering there are some serious omissions of my own) considering it was something of a haphazardly thrown together 3am project on my part. Goes to show I have spent too much time on this website. (Affectionate).

Been getting real tired of the quality of modern jeans (and modern clothing in general, but I wear jeans in particular almost every day) so I tracked down and ordered a couple 80s/90s pairs on a whim the other day and god. Only one of them fits, which is the danger of shopping online (which is fine, I’ll probably just resell the other pair), but I can feel the difference. They’re so much sturdier, even if it means I’m going to have to break them in a little. And I’ve been coming to the realization that I look better in high-waisted things anyways, so I even like the style more.

Anyway. Guess I’m never buying anything made after the year 2000 ever again, unless it’s from a specialty shop. It’s not like these were even wildly more expensive that a new pair goes for these days.

Feeling directly sniped by the person in the tags of my tumblr movie post saying the difference between my list and the other person’s list is representative of the old fandom/aesthetic blog divide. Like it proves I was onto something, but at what cost.

astriiformes:

I know that realistically you can only fit so many movies into a list of approximately 100, but I cannot take that “How many of tumblr’s favorite movies have you seen?” list that’s been going around seriously because there are some truly egregious omissions.

Some of it is very clearly recency bias, which makes me wonder if the op truly wasn’t on here in 2013 or so, but you’re telling me you made a list of “tumblr’s favorite movies” that doesn’t include Pacific Rim or Mad Max: Fury Road? Because, like, I was there, Gandalf.

I’m a ridiculous human and genuinely couldn’t sleep until I tried my hand at a better, more balanced list – though of course, I have my own biases when it comes to what corners of this website I’ve lurked in over the years. For what it’s worth, I did consult the last several Years In Review, while also drawing on the fact that I’ve been here for over a decade. But if there’s anything that truly doesn’t feel like it should have made the cut, blame my mutuals for putting it on my dash all the time.

(And apologies, but I couldn’t seem to find Goncharov among the website’s listings)

atundratoadstool:

“The networks by which the heroes move, speak, and write mirror the network of psychical and physical fluids that the Count seeks to infect. […] I argue that this clash between real and surreal, in which the reader is dragged through fantasies of telepathy before being plunged into the minutiae of train tables, has its ultimate expression in the epistolary format of the novel. At the heart of this narrative, we find that Mina Harker is not solely engaged in a psychical struggle with the Count, pitting her mind against his through the mesmeric link they share. She also counteracts his invasive vampiric mesmerism with the text itself. Mina, who is constantly organizing, reading, copying, and collating the novel we ourselves are reading, sets up her own links between human minds and hearts, creating a web that can ensnare the creature seeking to invade and pollute the systems that bind together mortal mankind.”

— I got a lot of mileage working through my thoughts by just posting bits and pieces of my Masters’ thesis to tumblr when the mood struck me, so have this line from my upcoming doctoral dissertation, which is about a lot of things but partly about how Mina is really neat and train tables are sort of like telepathy.
