Yes, that double “faux” is on purpose! Everyone seems to love wooden ceiling beams, and I’ve seen several DIY ways to add your own if you don’t have real ones. Most methods involve buying wood and building 3-sided “beams” before nailing them onto a 4th top side attached to the ceiling. They look very nice. However, they are still heavy enough to make me worried about how well they’d be attached overhead. Installation certainly seems like a multi-person job, too. I went with cedar because I couldn’t resist the rough, natural vibe, but you can totally use whatever wood like. I gave the beams a light sanding and treated them with wood conditioner. I played around with stains—starting with antique white and walnut—but the cedar was pulling a bit red, so I added a final layer of Early American by for a perfect finish. For the install, I used scrap wood attached to the studs and mounted the beams onto that—super simple and sturdy! This DIY was such a game changer for our hallway, and I LOVE the transformation here.
