After its successful premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, “Navalny” received an Academy Award nomination for “best documentary feature film”. We talked with the film’s cinematographer Niki Waltl, AAC about the making of the Navalny documentary.

Videography Educator | Brandon Johnson on Instagram: "Easiest Interview Setup Ever 🎤🎥✅ Mastering the art of lighting is one of the strongest skills a videographer can have in their toolbox and it’s not as hard as you may think. Here’s my breakdown for how I approach every interview I film: We’re aiming for something called Rembrandt lighting — just a lighting technique that provides nice intentional shadows on the face of your talent. Gives the talent a more dramatized look and feel. This is done by using 1-2 lights and a reflector to light the face evenly but also introduce shadows on one side of the face. If done correctly, you get something called the “Rembrandt Patch” — an upside down triangle of light on the darker side of the face.
