I've dabbled in jewelry making for many years but only seem to produce one piece a year. Why then do I have three drawers full of jewelry making supplies? The passion runs deep but has not been fully unearthed. But a box full of kantha cloth scraps has focused my attention in the new year. Kantha jewelry starts with the idea of giving new life to old things. Kantha quilts are a traditional textile found all over India, made from layers of old cotton saris, sewn together with a running “kantha” stitch. Artisans transform the scraps into beads for jewelry and nothing goes to waste! New life is given to a textile that would otherwise be discarded.
