South Bend, Indiana​ spent much of its history as an industrial powerhouse. As with other Rust Belt cities, the latter half of the 20th century brought economic hardship. The gears of many industries ground to a halt, leaving abandoned factories and homes in their wake.

The Ruhr area used to be the heart of Germany's heavy industry. With the decline of coal mining and steel production in the last decades of the 20th century it suffered a fate similar to the American rust belt. Hence the title.
