Say “hold it”, keep the toy in your dog’s mouth and see if they’re willing to keep the toy in her mouth. Mark and reward even they hold for a second! 3. In the beginning I was helping my puppy hold the toy, but I eventually took my hand away and let her hold the toy on her own. 4. Slowly start to increase duration of hold it once your dog starts to understand the command. 5. Try “hold it” with different objects! Tips: » I would highly recommend incorporating a training clicker when teaching this. The clicker communicates the exact moment your dog does what you want, which is then followed by treat & reward. Step 3: Get your pup to pick up the leash, place your hand under their mouth and ask them to ‘drop it’ into your hand. Reward to mark this correct action! 👏🏽 Step 4: Start moving the leash further away and have them bring it back to you. Introduce your verbal cue here—I use “get your leash.” Continue to move the leash further away, and finally, place the leash on an object and have them retrieve it for you!
