We are currently working through the specification for an IGCSE in Biology. The following is copied straight from that specification and is all the information we need to know about meiosis: Understand that division of a cell by meiosis produces four cells, each with half the number of chromosomes, and that this results in the formation… Continue reading Genetics: Cell division – Meiosis

GCSE & A Level Biology Teacher / Tutor on Instagram: "Confused between mitosis and meiosis? Here are 4 memory tips that might help!👇

1️⃣ Meiosis has an “e” in it, which helps you remember that meiosis makes eggs or sperm (gametes). But remember, it doesn’t happen in the gametes - just in the cells of the reproductive organs that go on to make them.

2️⃣ Mitosis has a “t” in it - think T for toes. Mitosis happens in your toes (and everywhere else in your body) to make identical new cells for growth or replacing damaged ones.

3️⃣ “T” also stands for twins. Mitosis makes 2 genetically identical cells, like twins, with the same number of chromosomes as the original cell.

4️⃣ If you colour the letters in, you can see how many times the cell divides! In mitosis, it divides once to make 2 cel Meiosis 1 And 2, Mitosis And Meiosis, Memory Tips, A Level Biology, Biology Teacher, Cell Division, Science Project, The Cell, Science Projects

Meiosis has 1 round of replication (S in interphase) and 2 rounds of division. Mitosis has 1 rnd. of rep. and 1 rnd. of div. Mechanism same for both, just extra div. in meiosis. If connected together, chromatids equal 1 chromosome. If chromatids are not connected, then each individual chromatid is a chromosome. Meiosis I is reductional division b/c go from diploid (2 chrom. to haploid (1 chrom.) in cells. Meiosis II is equational division b/c go from hap. to hap. Mei. end=4 hap. Mit. end=2 dip.
