The need to educate for sustainable development is a point based on current international educati... more The need to educate for sustainable development is a point based on current international educational policies. It is crucial to develop in students the skills necessary to critically analyse and make decisions in the face of current issues related to environmental, social, and economic dimensions, from a systemic perspective. However, the literature highlights the shortage of resources intentionally designed to support teaching and pedagogical practices of the teachers consistent with these guidelines. Thus, this study aims to develop strategies, design and exploit educational multimedia resources that promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) based on Science-Technology-Society (STS) in Science Education, through the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Family Involvement in the early years of schooling, as well as understand the impact of these strategies and resources in teachers' practices to make them more consistent with the ESD/STS guidelines. Facing this purpose, we adopted a qualitative methodology, including multiple case studies in set along the process of exploration, design and implementation of strategies and educational multimedia resources. The study involved a group of primary schools located at Aveiro (Portugal), their teachers, as well as students and their respective families. By understanding teachers like the key influence in the educational process, the study involved the design and implementation of a teachers training and an online community to serve as a platform for communication between schools and families. Thus, the method used to collect data covered surveys, observation and document analysis. The respective instruments used for each method relied on questionnaires, diary research, reflexive e-portfolios and posts in the online community. Qualitative and quantitative data was analysed using the method of content analysis and descriptive statistical analysis, respectively. The results show that the integration of ICT and encouraging family involvement contributes positively to the promotion of ESD in the early years of school education. However, considering the context under study where schools serve a variety of families that are socio-economically disadvantaged, it is necessary to rethink the integration of ICT, so that they are not configured as a further barrier to family involvement. Thus, working an ESD/STS approach beyond the school walls, involving students' families, and using ICT as a bridge of communication is presented in this research as the main contribution to the achievement of the ESD.
This study is part of a research project that aims to develop an online Community of Practice (Co... more This study is part of a research project that aims to develop an online Community of Practice (CoP) to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the Portuguese context. Its potential members (teachers, pupils, parents, researchers and others) will collaborate in order to develop educational resources, to develop and share innovative teaching and learning strategies underlying an ESD approach, and help national school projects to implement an ESD approach. The aim of this paper is to present the first phase of the project: to collect the perceptions of a multidisciplinary team of researchers, who have different competences, about the principles that help to develop and sustain a CoP in the scope of ESD. Through a design-based research approach, the main technical and educational guidelines that emerged from a focus group survey will be presented. Some of the main key ideas discussed were (i) the need to be supported with the provision of teacher training and consultancy services, (ii) the identification of teachers that are already leaders in their own schools, and that could assume the leadership of this CoP, and (iii) the importance of opening the community up to other type of users, with different possibilities of access and interaction.

Numa sociedade cada vez mais permeada pelo desenvolvimento científicotecnológico emerge o reconhe... more Numa sociedade cada vez mais permeada pelo desenvolvimento científicotecnológico emerge o reconhecimento da importância da Educação em Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade (CTS). Neste sentido, investigações estão a ser produzidas sobre a relação existente entre as concepções dos professores sobre CTS e suas práticas de ensino, mas os resultados são controversos.
Atualmente há um crescente reconhecimento da importância do envolvimento familiar através das TIC... more Atualmente há um crescente reconhecimento da importância do envolvimento familiar através das TIC na promoção de uma melhor educação escolar das crianças. Contudo, a conceção da parceria família-escola através das TIC encontra algumas barreiras. Ao identificar uma escassez de investigação sobre a promoção do envolvimento familiar através das TIC em contexto socioeconómico desfavorecido, principalmente em Portugal, este artigo procura contribuir para a compreensão do papel que as TIC desempenham na promoção do envolvimento familiar nestes contextos. O estudo foi implementado em três escolas do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, envolvendo alunos, pais e professores. Através de um programa de formação de professores, procurou-se explorar e conceber recursos multimédia através de ferramentas livres da Web 2.0 para fomentar o envolvimento família-escola. Os resultados emergem da aplicação de um questionário aos 401 participantes e das interações pais-alunos-professores registadas nos recursos desenvolvidos. Estes resultados sugerem que a partilha online dos recursos pelos professores, divulgando as atividades dos alunos, encoraja a participação dos pais.
