SKATE delivers the feel of skating through innovative controls, authentic cameras and a fully reactive skateboarding city. The game features professional skaters such as Danny Way and PJ Ladd, as well as a reactive city and relevant in-game cameras. SKATE's unique control scheme captures the true feel of skating versus the typical button mashing gameplay of past skating games. Featuring physics-driven animations, gamers will have a unique gaming experience every time they pick up the controller since no two tricks will ever be the same.

I remember being so unbelievably hyped for this game when it first got announced, it was probably the first time I marked a games release date on my calendar as a kid. I spent half my days daydreaming about what it was going to be like, constantly poring over screenshots and the very few clips we received of it in advance.
Shockingly, I was not disappointed when the day finally came; it was incredible. It felt like something entirely different to most other things coming out at the time. I played through it repeatedly, and was a very satisfied 12 year old.
Coming back to it modern day, I honestly think it holds up pretty well. I think it has the best aesthetic of the 3 games in the series, and feels a bit more lived in than the 3rd.
Not being able to get off your board definitely holds this one back from being my favorite though; Skate 2 gets that honor. (Thanks to the walking addition and for having the best map in the series). However, I would still put this above Skate 3. I didn't expect that going in, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Nostalgia probably flavors my series rankings a bit, but what can you do.

I didn't complete this one per-se, as I got about 14 hours of gameplay in when I just decided that I felt like I had found all of the interesting spots and done my fair share of tricks. This was a really fun skate game though, with the best tricking controls I have experienced so far (compared to True Skate on iPhone and THPS 1+2 on Switch), and I'm really excited to see all the new things that Skate 2 has to offer. I will say though, some of these missions were superrrrr precise in what they wanted you to do which was quite frustrating. All in all though, this was a comforting and oddly nostalgic (since I had never played this until now) game to play.
