Tokyo Mirage sessions is nominally a crossover between Fire Emblem and SMT. In reality, it is neither - it is a bouncy, bubbly J-pop JRPG set in a very much still around Tokyo. You play as pop and TV idols who use the power of performance to defeat evil Mirages with Mirages of their own (all of which are Fire Emblem characters).
Combat is fantastic. Most fights are challenging, but not brutal; it's a good balance between the easier Persona games and the harder SMT games. There's a weapon triangle like in Fire Emblem, along with elemental weaknesses. You can see which characters will have turns next, and if you exploit a weakness, you unleash a "Session" - a flurry of allied attacks. But watch out - enemies can do this too!
The story overall is pretty fine, but the characters are the true bright spots. Each party member is really interesting, and they all have their own side stories. Main character Itsuki is not a silent protagonist, but he's not a particularly noteworthy lead. And there are some very neat Fire Emblem references.
Overall, if you want a light, fun JRPG experience that has some great J-pop songs and a truly upbeat vibe, you can't go wrong with Tokyo Mirage Sessions. If you're looking for something like SMT or Fire Emblem, though, keep in mind - this is not either. It's a unique adventure.
