I'm thinking about this game, weirdly, in relation to WarioWare. Both operate in a pretty similar space: constant time-stressed challenges changing from moment to moment without a way to prepare. This is a mode that not a lot of games deliberately try to induce. But the key difference is that Mullet Madjack's gameplay never changes from moment to moment, the time limit instead moderating the flow. And that sense of flow between each moment is the stated gameplay purpose here. In a way, it's successful at that, but the reason WarioWare lands so hard for me and this doesn't is because of that. Even with a drip feed of mechanics, the game never feels that varied. You pretty rapidly feel like you've seen everything the game has to offer. The enemies and obstacles don't have a ton of variance, and often function indistinguishably. The flow exists, but flow is not an intrinsically positive experience. The game is fun, and it has its moments, but play feels sort of shallow. Points for style, at least!

It's undeniably better than the original... but isn't something lost?

Why you would remake a game as awful as Death Crimson is beyond me, let alone produce a sequel. It might as well be a completely different game. This time, the game is actually borderline playable. Don't get it twisted: it's still quite bad, especially if you're playing without a lightgun. You still have no idea what you're shooting at or really why. The shooting is repetitive and unforgiving, the plot is nonsense, and it also dabbles in some racism. All of that is true of the original, too. It lacks Kunitaka Watanabe's proggy soundtrack for the most part, which is absolutely a mark against it. (Strangely, as far as I can tell this is the only soundtrack he's done.) The new soundtrack is fine, it has some nice cuts, but it lacks the character and experimentation that the original had. But hey... you fight a guy named "Stink the Sword" so it can't be all bad.

the biggest downside is that the game is so unfair that you dont even really get to listen to the banging soundtrack
