Why Batgirls?

Since the 50s, the girls and women of the batfamily have had a vexing place in it. From Kathy and Betty’s initial introduction, solely as love interests to assuage accusations of homosexuality and immorality from readers, to the Rebirth era where there is still debate in the fandom of ‘who’ counts as batgirl, a batkid, or a ‘core’ batfam member, there’s an unfortunate undercurrent of misogyny that can be felt to this day. To answer that, and hopefully remedy the divide in visible content seen on batblogs, this one will solely focus on the women and girls who have worked in Gotham, most frequently alongside Batman both within the Batfam, and beside it.

Gender diversity in media is steadily becoming more balanced and disruptive of cisnormative ideals, and the call to reflect that in fanwork is stronger now more than ever. We still have a long way to go, but celebrating and uplifting fanwork centered on these women is one way I hope to contribute to that.
