Summary: And then it happens: Caitlyn smiles. Not much, not enough to even classify as a true smile, but just enough to see the tip of an unnaturally sharp canine poke out from under her top lip.
Okay, sure.
Why not.
or,
Vi lives across the street from vampires. It probably isn’t as weird as it ought to be.

Notes: Written for @pinkpastels113 and FULLY inspired by What We Do in the Shadows, because the concept of vampires not knowing how to act normal is hysterical to me. Enjoy!
Vi stands by the front window in the living room, stirring her coffee idly as she watches the house across the street.
The sun’s just set, her shift’s in an hour, and Vi has started to notice a pattern.
There are thick, heavy-looking curtains covering up every single window of their neighbors’ house. Dark blue with gold detailing, not even a sliver of light escaping in or out through the dense material.
Jinx passes by on her way towards the stairs, raising an eyebrow questioningly at Vi’s casual position by the window. Vi juts her chin up at her and raises her coffee, to which Jinx shrugs and continues on her way.
Across the street, the curtains covering the top right window part, revealing a woman with long, dark hair and fair skin. She gazes up towards the sky, a small smile on her face that seems to shine in the moonlight.
Vi takes a sip of her coffee, burns her tongue. Doesn’t take her eyes off her neighbor.
The woman carefully ties back the curtains before opening the window, stepping up onto the narrow ledge. The first time she’d done this, Vi had nearly pissed herself and ran outside to shout at her out of fear, but now all she does is stir her coffee some more, working to mix in as much of the grounded bits as she can.
Now, when the woman takes a cursory look around the empty street, Vi just smirks. And when she quickly works her way up the flat side of the house to sit on the edge of the roof, Vi just takes another sip of coffee.
The woman swings her feet idly, seemingly unaware of the eyes watching her from across the street. Vi allows herself one more minute of waiting around to see if anything else happens before walking away from the window and back towards the kitchen, draining her coffee with a sniff.
Yep. Business as usual.

Summary: There are letters addressed to her. Dozens, all written in Caitlyn’s elegant script and dark blue ink.
And Vi can’t help herself. She gathers them up and starts to read.

Vi discovers the letters Caitlyn wrote to her during their time apart.
Words: 5.7k
Rating: T
Notes: Hello this was basically just an excuse for me to get my thoughts oriented on what Caitlyn’s mindset must have been like during her dictator era, and then it turned into a bit of a hurt/comfort monster. Enjoy!
“Cait?”
Vi pokes her head into the office, looking to see if Caitlyn was working at her desk. The lights are off and the computer dark, but Vi shrugs and steps into the room to get a closer look anyway. The fancy back of the desk chair was high and wide enough to hide Caitlyn completely, thanks to her slender frame and the fact that, like, ninety percent of her height came from her legs (which, Vi wasn’t about to complain about at all), and it wouldn’t be the first time she’d fallen asleep reading through files.
She crosses the room and peeks around the side of the chair, then huffs when she finds it empty. Most of the time when she couldn’t find Caitlyn, she could find her here, working until she couldn’t keep her eyes open. Or she’d find her in their bedroom, but Vi had already checked there, too. Maybe she should check the kitchen? Did Caitlyn even know how to cook?
As Vi turns to leave, her elbow bumps against a box perched precariously on a filing cabinet by the desk, sending it crashing to the floor, lid popping off and papers flying everywhere.
“Shit,” Vi mumbles, immediately crouching down to gather the papers up. She has no idea if they were arranged in any specific order. Knowing Caitlyn, they probably were, but Vi tries not to think about that.
She’s rifling through pages, flipping them around so they’re all oriented the same way, when something written at the top of one catches her eye, making her freeze.

so. since we don’t see cait and vi between their sex scene and the war council with mel and jayce. it’s plausible that they weren’t originally planned to be at the meeting. or they couldn’t find caitlyn and decided to just start without her. so jayce and mel just showed up down in the bunker while cait and vi were still going at it. and just. invited them to go through battle tactics with them. it’s entirely possible that this is what happened.
this art by @qvert has destroyed me. consider this a counterattack.
* * *
Falling asleep at her desk wasn’t new.
The dream was.
It’s easier to push unwanted memories to the back of her mind when she’s awake, when she can keep herself busy. It’s easier to make the past a blurry spot in her mind’s periphery when she’s sparring with Ambessa, strategizing with Maddie. She could hide her internal struggles behind work, has done it before.
Commander Kiramman didn’t run from ghosts. She hunted them.
Unfortunately, the moment she finally allows her eyes to fall shut, when she physically can’t keep them open any longer, the tight control she has over her own thoughts slips away.
Caitlyn remembers the moment vividly, no matter how hard she tries to forget it. The vulnerability on Vi’s face, the exhaustion seeping through her bones, the lingering smell of smoke and blood clinging to their clothes. It lives somewhere deep within her, somewhere she hasn’t been able to find and carve out yet.
But she’s never dreamed of it before.
Vi’s eyes are distant as she talks about her sister. The love she holds for Powder is obvious with every facet of her being; it spills from her pores almost as overwhelmingly as the regret that goes along with it.
Caitlyn watches with hooded eyes, body screaming for sleep that she’s unwilling to give – not when Vi is baring herself so openly. Not when she looks so soft and young and handsome lying in Caitlyn’s bed, fingers tracing her bedsheets as if there were no other place she’d rather be.
She wants to kiss her- has always wanted to kiss her, she thinks. But she won’t interrupt Vi, won’t rob her of this opportunity to talk without burden.
“Then a real monster showed up,” Vi says, eyes closing in deep remorse, “and I just ran away. I left her.”
And Caitlyn doesn’t think- can’t think about anything but easing the pain in Vi’s voice. She reaches out, gently drags two fingers down Vi’s cheek, soft, weathered skin brushing against the backs of her knuckles.
Vi reaches up and stops her hand before it can pull away, keeps it close to her instead. When her eyes blink open, something like amazement shining in her expression, Caitlyn’s heart skips a beat faster and-
Caitlyn doesn’t startle awake. Her eyes open sluggishly, registering slowly that she’d been dreaming. She’s still slumped over at her desk, face buried in her elbow, and through the one eye not obstructed by black fabric she sees her hand extended out in front of her, palm open and empty and cold.
A shiver ripples through her body and Caitlyn pulls her hand back in, curling in on herself.
The warmth of Vi lingers with her. She can’t find it in herself to push it away this time, not when it’s the middle of the night and she’s alone in her office instead of the bed stained with the memory of what she’s lost.
Caitlyn squeezes her eyes shut, presses her palms to the closed lids hard, wills the memory of Vi looking at her as if she was worth her fragile love to stay in her mind for just a moment longer.
Alone in her dark office, no one is around to see Caitlyn cry.
