The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra will be the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender. This series will focus on Korra, the new Avatar after Aang, who is of Southern Water Tribe descent. In this series, there will be a total of 26 episodes spanned across two season set to air in 2012. Unfortunately, an exact air-date has yet to be confirmed, but much speculation and emphasis on it being released “soon” points to a late March to mid Summer premier.

Plot

Not much is known about the plot of The Legend of Korra, but certain elements have been officially released to us. Korra, the female protagonist of the story, has already mastered three elements at the start of the series. She goes to Republic City to learn Airbending from Master Tenzin, Aang and Katara’s youngest child and one of the few Airbenders left. Republic City is everything that Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko fought for when they ended the Hundred Year War. With balance restored to the four nations, benders and non-benders can live together in peace, in this thriving metropolitan area. But even the steampunk paradise of Republic City has its problems, as the next Avatar discovers. When Avatar Korra arrives in Republic City to master her airbending, she comes face to face with criminal bending gangs as well as members of a vocal anti-bending revolution. Before long, Korra’s Avatar skills are put to the test when she encounters a group of Chi-blockers led by the charismatic and mysterious Amon, who threatens the city and all the benders in it. Despite the immense danger, Korra vows to fight the growing anti-bending revolution.

Korra

Korra was born in the Southern Water Tribe after the death of Avatar Aang. After she found out her destiny as the new Avatar, her training started in order for her to become a fully realized Avatar. She appeared to have discovered early in her life she was the Avatar, as she proudly announced it to the Order of the White Lotus when they came to the Southern Water Tribe seeking her after her family claimed she was the Avatar, and performed waterbending, earthbending, and firebending before the Order. Having already mastered the mentioned elements, Korra only needs to learn and master the art of airbending and gain full control over the Avatar State in order to become a fully realized Avatar. A 17-year-old girl from the Southern Water Tribe, she is as hot-headed and eager as she is talented. When she runs away to Republic City, her stubbornness and impatience get in the way of her bending studies, but it is clear from the start that she is destined for greatness. Korra discovers many new things in Republic City - some amazing and some terrifying. Whether its honing her bending skills in the Pro-bending Arena, facing off with street thugs or facing an anti-bending rebellion, Korra learns that being the Avatar comes with many dangers and responsibilities.

Korra couldn’t have less in common with Aang, the previous Avatar. Korra is fiery and pugnacious. Her personality is in many ways the opposite of Avatar Aang. He was a peaceful, diffident, nomadic airbender, whereas Korra is tough, headstrong, and assertive. However, just like Aang, she also has a good sense of humor, with a teenage charm and vulnerability.

Korra is a Waterbender with a fiery personality. She’s an athletic, confident, headstrong girl who fully accepts and relishes her role as “The Chosen One.” Korra has mastered water, earth and firebending, but has yet to conquer airbending. She believes that being a powerful bender is all that it takes to be a great Avatar. However, Korra has much to learn when it comes to the spiritual side of life. Her lack of spiritual development is one of the reasons Korra has been unable to overcome her airbending block.

Naga

Korra’s polar bear-dog is her loyal companion and main mode of transportation. Historically, this creature was feared and hunted by members of the Water Tribe. Korra is the only person ever to have tamed one. Naga is very protective of Korra, and has learned how to use her strength to help Korra out of perilous situations.

Tenzin

Born sometime after the War to Aang and Katara as the youngest of their three children, he was taught the traditions and customs of the Air Nomads by his father, eventually acquiring the traditional Air Nomad tattoos, symbolizing his status as an airbending master. He then moved on to find Pema, whom he eventually married, and had three airbending children with her; two daughters, Jinora and Ikki, and a son, Meelo, with another child on the way. Tenzin, as the late Avatar’s son and an airbender, carried a great responsibility on his shoulders to continue the dream of his father to protect not only the next Avatar, but also Republic City. His tutelage in the art of airbending was sought by Avatar Korra, who moved in with his family on the island in order to continue her training. Usually very serious and calm, Tenzin found his serene life turned upside down by his young student. As Korra’s teacher, Tenzin finds his patience tested time and again but he also realizes that while she has a lot to learn from him, he also has something to learn from her.

Tenzin was far more serious than his father, however, he could have a sense of humor at times. He always tried to be a calm person, an attempt that was sometimes thwarted by his three “crazy” children. He found his patience severely tested with the arrival of the impetuous Korra.

He serves on the United Republic Council as the representative for the Air Nation, and takes his role in the leadership of Republic City very seriously. Tenzin is a traditionalist who works hard to protect and transmit Air Nomad teachings and culture. He embodies the peaceful, calm, spiritual nature of the Air Nomads. As Korra’s airbending teacher and mentor in her spiritual development, Tenzin has difficulty getting through to her because they are complete opposites: whereas she is unorthodox, impatient, and forceful, he is traditional, patient, and gentle.

Bolin

No matter how intense things get around Republic City (and they do get intense), Bolin is always good for a laugh. Mako’s younger brother and Pro-bending teammate, Bolin tends to be more laidback and likes to have a good time. Despite their tough childhood, Bolin always has a smile on his face and a lady on his arm. In fact, it was Bolin who was responsible for introducing Mako to Korra. But Bolin is no clown. When the time comes to buckle down and bend some earth, this tough contender can handle his business.

Despite a tough childhood on the street, Bolin is a more laid-back, naive, and goofier kind of guy than his older brother Mako. Although always good for a laugh, he shouldn’t be mistaken for a clown. As an earthbender, he can handle his business, and proved to be a tough contender and a worthy teammate to Mako and Korra in a Pro-bending match. One day he found a fire ferret, to whom he named Pabu, scrounging for food in the garbage and decided to take him in. The two became partners in crime for playing jokes on Mako.

Bolin is expressive, high-spirited, and enthusiastic. Physically, he is stocky and muscular. He has a great sense of humor and is really comfortable in his own skin. Unlike his brother Mako, he’s an easy-going optimist who never seems to be in a bad mood. Bolin plays in the Pro-bending Arena alongside his brother and enjoys all the attention from his girl fans, although he is still a novice in the world of dating. For all their differences, the brothers share an intense bond and are fiercely loyal to each other.

Mako

A Firebender with a serious side, the handsome and brooding Mako has always taken care of his little brother, Bolin. Growing up on the streets has given him a hard edge, but Mako loves his brother and will do anything to protect them both. Intensely focused on getting their team through the Pro-bending tournament and winning the jackpot, Mako’s tightly controlled world gets a little more chaotic when Korra enters the picture.

He grew up on the streets of Republic City with his younger brother Bolin, whom he loved dearly. Hardened by the street life, there was nothing Mako wouldn’t do to secure the safety of his brother and himself. As the more brooding and serious brother of the two, he is intensely focused on getting his Pro-bending team, of which his brother is a part, through the tournament to win the jackpot.

Chief Lin Bei Fong

Born to Toph Bei Fong sometime after the War, Lin inherited the earthbending prowess of her mother, eventually mastering the art and its subskill, metalbending. As an adult, she became the Chief of Police of Republic City, where she stood at the head of a group of metalbender cops.

Her mother Toph taught Avatar Aang how to earthbend, but Chief Lin Bei Fong doesn’t feel any special affection for the new Avatar. In fact, this metal and earthbending police chief sees Korra’s arrival as the biggest threat Republic City has faced in recent times. Korra’s reckless ways are constantly leaving Lin Bei Fong’s streets in ruin, and this chief is determined to push the Avatar out of her city.

Amon

Little is known about the mysterious leader of the anti-bending revolution. He wears a mask to conceal his face. He is a nimble, stealthy fighter who shows no fear even against the highest-level bender. His ultimate goal is to rid the world of bending.

The Lieutenant

Amon’s second-in-command, The Lieutenant, is an intense, disciplined fighter who augments his amazing skills with two electrified kali sticks. No Metalbender cop can withstand his attack.

The Equalists

The Equalists is an organization directed against the art of bending, and as a direct result, benders themselves. Exactly what they dislike about bending is thus far unknown. They utilize chi blocking as a means to counteract bending and its advantages. Little is known about the Equalists, except for the fact that they harbor ill will towards benders and the bending arts. What caused this animosity is unknown. It is unknown what their actions will be towards the bending society, or if this opinion manipulates why they harbor resentment towards Korra, the current Avatar. There are apparently two type of Equalists: those who are skilled in the art of chi blocking and those who wear special suits. It is unknown if these special suits grant the wearer some special abilities, or if they are simply a suit of armor.

Asami Sato

As the daughter of Hiroshi Sato, Asami has lived a life of luxury but don’t let her fancy clothes and polite manners fool you — Asami has a tough side too. She’s an expert driver and isn’t afraid to mix it up on the racetrack. Asami has also had the best self-defense training money can buy. She’s a big fan of Pro-bending and goes to every match.

Hiroshi Sato

A barrel-chested businessman with a big personality, Hiroshi Sato’s family lineage extends back to the first Fire Nation colonists. He was born to a poor family from the Dragon Flats district. A kid with big dreams, Hiroshi worked from a very young age to help support his family. When he was 18, he convinced a wealthy banker to invest in the idea of automobiles for the common man. Before long, he was churning out Satomobiles in his first Future Industries factory. By the time he was 25, the ingenious industrialist had made his first million yuans.

Katara

Many years have passed since her adventures in the original series, but the wise and maternal Katara understands the demands put upon the Avatar and does her best to support Korra at all times. Not only is she Korra’s waterbending teacher, but her son Tenzin, is Korra’s airbending teacher.

Pema

Pema is the wife of Tenzin, and the mother of their three children, Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. Pregnant with a fourth child, Pema lived a serene life with her family on Air Temple Island. She is a non-bender. At some point, she married Tenzin and had three airbending children: Two daughters, Jinora and Ikki, and a son, Meelo; she is pregnant with their fourth child when Avatar Korra journeys to their home, and comes to live with them for a while in order to complete her airbending training. The impetuous teenager turned her quiet life upside down.

Jinora

Jinora is the first child and eldest daughter of Tenzin and Pema, and granddaughter of Katara and Avatar Aang, who lives on Air Temple Island with the rest of her family. Jinora is the eldest child born to Tenzin and his wife, Pema; her younger siblings were Ikki and Meelo, and there is another sibling still on the way. Besides being taught airbending by her father, Jinora has an interest in books, and is a rather quiet girl in general.

Ikki

Ikki is an airbender and the youngest daughter of Tenzin and Pema, and the granddaughter of Avatar Aang and Katara. She lived with her parents and two siblings on Air Temple Island, near Republic City. Born as the second child to Tenzin and Pema, she has an older sister named Jinora and a younger brother named Meelo. As her mother is pregnant, another younger sibling is still on the way. Ikki is fun, crazy, and a fast talker.

 Meelo

Meelo is the third child, and only son of Tenzin and Pema, as well as the grandson of Avatar Aang and Katara, who resides on Air Temple Island with the rest of his family Born as the first son to Tenzin and Pema, this young airbender had two older sisters, Jinora and Ikki; however, there is another younger sibling on the way.

Pabu

Bolin found this cute fire ferret scrounging for food on the street and rescued him. He’s a mischievous little fellow, always getting into things he shouldn’t. But Pabu has gotten Bolin out of plenty of sticky situations with his agility and sharp teeth, and more often, he’s been Bolin’s partner in crime while playing practical jokes on Mako.
