The use of mobile phones appears to provide a range of opportunities for supporting interaction w... more The use of mobile phones appears to provide a range of opportunities for supporting interaction with public displays. Furthermore, such interaction can help overcome some of the problems associated with interactions with public displays, e.g. the potential inability of users interact with a touch screen display because of its physical placement (e.g. inappropriate height for a wheelchair user), supporting multiuser interaction and as a means for enabling user content to be transferred to a public display or content from the public display to be transferred to the users device. In this paper we discuss our explorations of some of these interaction related issues based on a small number of deployed systems.

This paper addresses the changing nature of markets in an IT-rich and Internet connected world. T... more This paper addresses the changing nature of markets in an IT-rich and Internet connected world. Through a combination of case studies, theoretical analysis and parallels between issues in developed and emerging worlds, it explores whether technology can help create economic futures that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable for the emergent economies and also offer fresh directions for the culturally homogenised and resource wasteful west. The paper suggests that IT radically changes the 'ground rules' compared with the periods of intense development in western countries in the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, IT opens the way for less centralised growth, where global communications enable local collaboration, and those at the bottom of the economic pyramid can have presence on the world stage. However, realising the potential of IT to aid sustainability may require strategic efforts to create suitable information and economic infrastructures.

In this paper we investigate the appropriateness of formal specification languages for the descri... more In this paper we investigate the appropriateness of formal specification languages for the description of user interface phenomena. Specifically, we are concerned with the distinction between continuously available information, which we call status, and atomic, non-persistent information, which we call events. We propose a hybrid model and notation to address status and event phenomena symmetrically. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this model for designing and understanding mixed control interaction, an especially important topic in the design of multi-user systems.

Traditional database query formulation is intentional: at the level of schemas, table and column ... more Traditional database query formulation is intentional: at the level of schemas, table and column names. Previous work has shown that filters can be created using a query paradigm focused on interaction with data tables. This paper presents a technique, Query-through-Drilldown, to enable join formulation in a data- oriented paradigm. Instead of formulating joins at the level of schemas, the user drills down through tables of data and the query is implicitly created based on the user&amp;#x27;s actions. Query-through- Drilldown has been applied to a large relational database, but similar techniques could be applied to semi-structured data or semantic web ontologies.

Public displays are becoming increasingly commonplace, yet recent studies place the effectiveness... more Public displays are becoming increasingly commonplace, yet recent studies place the effectiveness and user acceptance of them into doubt. This paper motivates the need for a new class of display technology that can more effectively blend with its environment and introduces the concept of selforganizing emergent displays as a vehicle to achieving this. The paper goes on to briefly describe Firefly, a prototype emergent display system, and evaluate its scalability, effectiveness, and user acceptance through experimental analysis and a field trial.

ABSTRACT Web Science and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) are interdisciplinary arenas concerned ... more ABSTRACT Web Science and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) are interdisciplinary arenas concerned with the intersection of people and technology. After introducing the two disciplines we discuss overlaps and notable differences between them, covering subject matter, scope and methodology. Given the longer history of HCI, we identify and discuss some potential lessons that the Web Science community may be able to take from this field. These concern: the division between interpretivist and positivist approaches; methods and methodology; evaluation; and design focus and methods. In summary, this paper clarifies the relationship between the communities, signposting complementary aspects and ways in which they might collaborate in future.

Human activity unfolds partly through planning and learnt sequences of actions, and partly throug... more Human activity unfolds partly through planning and learnt sequences of actions, and partly through reaction to the physical objects and digital data in the environment. This paper describes various techniques related to automatic task assistance that take this role of data as central. Although this brings additional complexity, it also offers ways to simplify or bypass problems in task inference that otherwise appear difficult or impossible. Although the focus in this paper is on automated task support, the importance of objects and data in understanding tasks is one that applies to other forms of task analysis in the design process.

ABSTRACT This is a short introduction to information visualisation, which is increasingly importa... more ABSTRACT This is a short introduction to information visualisation, which is increasingly important in many fields as information expands faster than our ability to comprehend it. Visualisation makes data easier to understand through direct sensory experience (usually visual), as opposed to more linguistic/logical reasoning. This chapter examines reasons for using information visualisation both for professional data analysts and also end-users. It will also look at some of the history of visualisation (going back 4,500 years), classic examples of information visualisations, and some current challenges for visualisation research and practice. Design of effective visualisation requires an appreciation of human perceptual, cognitive and also organisational and social factors, and the chapter discusses some of these factors and the design issues and principles arising from them.

Enhancing Self-Reflection with Wearable Sensors

Advances in ubiquitous technologies have changed the way humans interact with the world around th... more Advances in ubiquitous technologies have changed the way humans interact with the world around them. Technology has the power not only to inform and perform but also to further peoples' experiences of the world. It has enhanced the methodological approaches within the CHI research realm in terms of data gathering (e.g. via wearable sensors) and sharing (e.g. via self-reflection methods). While such methodologies have been mainly adopted in isolation, exploring the implications and the synergy of them has yet to be fully explored. This workshop brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers to explore and experience the use of wearable sensors with self-reflection as a multi-method approach to conduct research and fully experience the world on-the-go.
