In honor of NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK we've got a new post!

Our libraries have been under attack for years now. Book bans and outright censorship are one thing, but extremists are also attempting to restrict library access for marginalized people; fire highly trained and educated librarians and replace them with untrained ideologues; privatize libraries to turn them into for-profit businesses; and close some libraries altogether, effectively killing community access to all the great services I talked about above.

And with the killdozer that is Project 2025 rampaging through our federal government, things are likely only going to get worse. We know from history that the people trying to ban books and censor diverse viewpoints are never the good guys. So I will just call these most recent attacks on our library system exactly what they are: an attack on our democracy itself.

Megan Phelps Roper, a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church, actually credits trips to her local library with getting her out of the viciously bigoted cult. The resources and librarians she encountered there helped release her from the hateful indoctrination she’d been fed since birth. And if that ain’t proof of concept, I don’t know what is!

This may be an odd question about taxes...Is there any way for me to file my taxes as a freelancer without alerting/notifying my parents as a dependent?

Context:

I've been trying to save up money to leave an abusive home, but the problem is that I'm not allowed to get a job (therefore my only option is freelancing) and I can't move out until after tax season. And I'm worried that my taxes would end up revealing my freelance job to my parents.

I can't file as independent because that would notify my parents, but I hear that they won't get notified of my income/job as long as I file as a dependent. I don't know if it's true, though. I'm also 90% sure that it's referring to a non-freelance job too.

I'm thinking it may be better to find somewhere that pays in gift cards (do those count as tax money?) or wait until after April.

Honey, this is the sort of thing we recommend consulting a tax professional about (which we are not… even though we play them on the internet). Your parents won’t be notified if you reach out to a tax accountant for a consultation. You might need to pay them for their time, however.

Does anyone else in Bitch Nation have advice for our sweet angel here?

Also, assuming you’re a minor… speak to a trusted adult (like a guidance counselor or teacher) about your situation. From what you say, your family sounds like they’re financially abusing you, and that usually comes with other forms of abuse. I apologize if I’m overstepping, but again… I’m a stranger on the internet, and while I care, I’m not in a position to give you the help you need.

My advice, as a fellow survivor of an abusive family: just don’t file yet.

You didn’t specify your timeline for leaving, but really my advice would change very little. If you’ll be out by Oct 15, calculate your taxes as an independent if you’re eligible, *pay* the IRS the amount due, and file an extension. That gives you until October to submit the paperwork, so your parents won’t know anything until after that.

If you won’t be out by October, still do the math and make the payment and file the extension, but don’t actually send your tax return (the paperwork showing your math that might out your freelance job) until after you’re able to move out. Yes, even if that makes it late. Even if it takes another year, or two years. Your safety is more important than keeping the IRS happy, and honestly as a freelancer making I’m guessing not very much money, you are small fry and they aren’t going to care. You *might* end up with a small penalty when you do finally submit the paperwork, but better that than tipping your hand to your parents who might block your escape.

As for a trusted adult, eh, maybe? Be really, really sure you can trust them; the adult I trusted went to my father and made things so so much worse. That was more than twenty years ago, so maybe the adults available to you are more educated about abuse. Just be careful.

My final thought is very much against the personal finance orthodoxy and somewhat contradicts what I said above, so grain of salt, But. I don’t know how much danger you’re in at home. *You* may not know how much danger you’re in. My experience (and the experience of the people I met through group therapy after I was out) is that it’s very, very hard to know how bad it is while you’re in it, and especially for teenagers/young adults you don’t have the life experience to compare and realize how not okay your situation really is. So. One thing to think about, is if *not* paying your taxes could get you out a month or two earlier, maybe don’t pay them right now. If you go that route you will have a mess to clean up once you’re out, but if that gets you safely away sooner it might be worth it.

Hello Lovelies, like everyone money is TIGHT and I've been trying to find a 2nd job that's not uber or door dashing but have been unsuccessful, I can get a little extra work here and there, but the point is finances are what they are for the moment. I live below poverty level and believe me there is nowhere I can cut back on expenses. I went to renew my Student Loan Income based repayment plan (I still owe 40k) and the application is frozen, it expires in May, but I can't reapply. What the heck do I do? If I end up off that repayment plan there's no way I can afford the most likely $400+ monthly bill. I would be paying them off if I could, but I am barely making it. I know a couple years ago you said don't repay at the moment because we thought the last admin would get something passed.

I would greatly appreciate it if you had any advice or words of comfort because I am STRESSED.

Sadly my dear, this is the exact kind of side effect we can expect from DOGE’s massive layoffs of government employees.

My advice is to keep trying on another day, on another computer, or from another IP address. Don’t give up. You deserve this income based repayment plan.

This is yet another reason why we wish the Biden administration had been able to wipe out even more peoples’ student loans before they left office.

oh bitches, Ive been suffering so much job woe the last year. I job hunted to over 6 months before finally landing something an assistant management position that pays decently well and with overtime potential, even though Ive never had explicit management experience. But the job is terrible. There's been a lot of being thrown in at the deep end without instructions, Im working at a brand new store with insane staffing issues (skeleton crew is the nicest way I could explain it, but the real problem is how upper management doesnt see this as a problem), and its work that i just dont enjoy anyways because its SO energy demanding that I haven't had more breaks than my 30 minute lunch in weeks. And thats considered normal!! Also, turns out I hate managing people, at least under these circumstances. So I'm job hunting again, even tho I've only been here 3 months, and I'm wondering about how I explain the shortness of my employment at this job during interviews. Should I be honest and say that the work environment/management was extremely difficult to deal with? Or should I be more coy and come up with something a little less critical of it, in case it makes me seem like a complainer? Thank you, and wish me luck

Be honest, my pet! Everyone understands that shitty workplaces exist. There’s no need to hide it. Just tell them if they ask.

Also, and I’m sad to report this, but the job market is really hard right now. So by the time you actually get an interview, months might have passed and it won’t look like you bounced immediately.

Good luck, pet. We believe in you!

Bitches, I'm between a rock and a hard place and begging for your help.

First: it is important that you know I live in a state where recreational marijuana is legal, because it affects everything I'm about to tell you.

I work for a relatively small company. I think there are maybe twenty people max in this plant, and there are only two plants. I work in industrial food-storage product manufacturing, so I'm working with heavy machinery all day.

My immediate supervisor is a stoner who keeps getting high on the clock. Some days he reeks so strongly of pot, or of trying to cover it up with Axe, that it actually makes my nose hurt. I finally reported him after trying to find him due to a mechanical error with my machine and catching him out back hotboxing with another employee. I literally wouldn't care if he went home and got absolutely baked every night after work, but he's on the clock and working with machines where you need to be alert and not have your reaction time stunted. I very much mind him doing it at work.

Well, here's where things get dicey. My boss thanked me--and then told my supervisor I'd turned him in, and two days later held a Zoom meeting with our other plant in another state where all our HR and ops staff are located, with me and the entire rest of the shift to ask everyone how they felt about his work and if they'd noticed the reek of pot, and they identified me, by name, as the person who'd made the report. To the entire shift. Another member of whom was smoking with the supervisor.

I've since mentioned the smell of pot being so thick I've gone home and still smelled it on myself, and was told that this is circumstantial so they can't do anything about it--because you know that thing I said about legal pot? Yeah, they could literally say "oh the wind was blowing the wrong way, that smell came from the dispensary." Even drug testing wouldn't prove they'd been getting high on the clock, only that they'd done pot, which, again, is legal and permissible as long as they're not doing it on work grounds.

GUESS WHO I FOUND FUCKING HOTBOXING AGAIN TONIGHT.

So: do I report it again, knowing he'll know it was me and that there is no other supervisor for me to work under because the plant is so small? Or do I keep it under my cap because this place has some very weird ideas about worker confidentiality and my review is coming up, and I don't want to tank my odds at a pay raise?

What the everloving fuck.

Your boss and HR threw you under the bus in a way I’m pretty sure IS ILLEGAL. Especially as they made you vulnerable to retaliation from the people smoking up on the job!

I recommend you get a new fucking job. And report the whole joint to your state’s department of labor on your way out the door.

If you DO choose to report again, try to go higher up the food chain. Is there a managerial department that oversees both plants? Go there. Report your boss and HR for outing you as well.

Should You Trust Your Human Resources Department?
