Why does software need to update just be yourself

Because the alternative is that the software remains vulnerable to exploits known by basically every hacker in the world. Security flaws are regularly discovered in more or less every major piece of software, and you want to get them fixed before they become widely enough known that they get used against you by a shady website, advertisement, document, email, or other vector of transmission.

I encourage taking security updates when they are available to you, because the alternative is a little like running around during COVID unvaccinated and maskless – you might turn out okay by luck, but it’s an unnecessary risk, and the risk increases the longer you wait.

(This is not necessarily applicable to major system upgrades, at least up until the point where the vendor declares the old version end-of-life and stops releasing security updates for it. You want to make sure that, if the vendor releases fixes for critical security issues, your system will get them. If your system has reached end-of-life and you haven’t upgraded, you might not.)
