It had taken a war and a wedding to convince Elizabeth that mornings could be enjoyed. The demands of her life before she ever stepped foot aboard the Black Pearl occurred in the twilight hours; and besides, any beauty she might have missed in a sunrise was echoed in magnitude at sunset, when the sky pressed vividly against a sea dark as wine as it bade the sun to its slumber.

Now, though, in the early colorless dawn, in a bed much more humble than those in the King’s House, she rouses opposite James, and marvels at all she has missed. The light just catches the suggestion of green off the corner of his eye as he lies in the silence, gently stroking the hair from her brow back behind her ear. She closes her eyes, savoring the brush of his skin against hers.

Elizabeth had learned that mornings could be enjoyed—but that does not mean she had mastered the art of waking early. Instead she draws James closer, pressing her face into his neck, and drifts back asleep to the rumble of his laughter.
