Amy’s review published on Letterboxd:
A bit of a slow burn, but it makes up for it in the end. It reminded me a bit of Jigoku in this way, where the majority of the film is fairly unassuming, only to totally throw you off your rocker in the last half-hour or so with some absolutely wild brutality. As Takashi Miike said in the introduction, “I think this represents an important turning point in Japanese cinema.”. Audition was stylish, gritty, sleazy, and full of wonderful camerawork. Parts of this reminded me a lot of the works of Park Chan-wook, especially The Vengeance Trilogy and The Handmaiden; so much so, I wonder if PCW took any small inspiration from this. I have a few other Miike’s in my collection, so I’ll add those to my “watch soon” list, I’m curious to explore the rest of his filmography.
