It's not about their memory. It's about showing who we are to the world, showing we'll not be bowed by tragedy. Because how we are in the future will be founded on how we behave today.
If you wonder, I’m doing this marathon because I’ll be traveling to England and Scotland in October, and my friends are huge fans of football and Manchester United. It seems like a no-brainer to them to visit Manchester before heading to Scotland, and I wanted to learn more about the club.
I recently watched the documentary Manchester United: For the Glory which was a great introduction for someone like me who don't know anything about the Club. I was fascinated by both the Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson eras. However, the way the club rose from the tragedy of the Munich Air Disaster is truly inspiring and unique.
The events surrounding the disaster are heart-wrenching. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about this before. So many young people with incredible talent, all with their lives ahead of them, lost in an instant. There are questions about the decisions that led to this tragedy, and while those involved will never be forgotten, no one could have predicted the outcome.
The film itself does a good job of portraying these events. The cast, including David Tennant, Jack O'Connell, and Sam Claflin, was well chosen. However, I felt that some aspects of the set design and editing seemed low in quality. I also heard that Matt Busby wasn't portrayed very well, and I might have wished for more football sequences; however, I understand that they weren’t the main focus of the story.
In the end, these flaws didn’t significantly detract from the overall impact of the story; it’s almost impossible not to be engaged by it. However, I should note that I’m somewhat biased when it comes to sports movies, even though this one is truly different.
