This is a list of the 120 highest-ranked films on Letterboxd in the decade of the 2010s, within certain qualifications, as of 21 February 2025.
To make a list like this meaningful, you need to set a threshold for numbers of ratings before including a film, mitigating the effect of spurious high ratings and recency bias in the case of more recent films, and helping ensure the rankings really do represent a significant consensus of viewers. The current threshold for the overall Letterboxd Top 250 is 15,000 ratings, but with such a high bar the list would be heavily slanted towards well-known Hollywood productions with a good few interesting films excluded. So I've set a threshold of 10,000 to allow a sufficiently varied list, revised up from 2,500 in February 2025 in line with an overall increase in the number of ratings.
Unlike the all-time list, I've included one-off television material, including mini-series, shorts, documentaries and non-narrative films besides narrative features, though I've made an exception for entries that are clearly individual episodes of ongoing TV series, a few of which are listed on Letterboxd for various reasons, as I don't think these are comparable with self-contained productions. From 2024, I've excluded all series with over 26 episodes, even if self-contained, as I think this is already an overgenerous definition of a mini-series. But I've left in episodes of anthology series like Black Mirror which have entirely separate stories, settings and casts.
As of May 2022, from the 1980s list onwards I've excluded films and videos of live music, comedy and theatre, as well as 'Making Of' documentaries and music videos, though I've made a few discretionary exceptions for examples that were released theatrically and are highly regarded as films in their own right. I'm uncomfortable that this sounds arbitrary but the alternative is for later lists to include a significant proportion of material of this kind, which I'm sure most people have rated highly not for their inherent virtue as films/videos but for the subject of them. I don't think their inclusion is particuarly useful in lists aimed primarily at film lovers.
There are 120 titles in these lists in the hope that the world's film (and TV) industries can manage at least one masterpiece a month on average.
This is the last in my series of decadal lists: the others can be found at letterboxd.com/desdemoor/tag/highest-rated-by-decade/lists/ . I didn't think it was worth repeating the exercise for the 2020s so far, as it would be hopelessly affected by recency bias. As it is, the 2010s are notably skewed towards 2018 and 2019.
<- Back to 2000-2009.
Pedant's corner: I personally believe the 2010s began on 1 January 2011, but sadly most of the rest of the world seems to disagree with me, including Letterboxd. So to make life easier, all the films listed were released between 2010 and 2019 inclusive.
