You would definitely need to add "that" if the last part of of you sentence could not stand alone as a sentence.

'Apparent' means 'seems' or 'looks like.'

With 'apparent gift,' the writer is saying 'it looks like they have this special ability.' As a reader, I understand the writer means 'it looks like they have this special ability, but they actually do not have it' or 'but there is a different explanation.' :)
