Osborne House, in East Cowes, was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer residence. The oldest section, the Pavilion, was designed by the prince himself, to resemble an Italian palazzo, and built by Thomas Cubitt. Three wings were added subsequently: the Household Wing (in 1848), the Main Wing (in 1851) and the Durbar Wing (in 1892). Queen Victoria died at Osborne in 1901, and the house and estate were presented to the nation by King Edward VII in 1902…
