The prospect of pulling handles used to fill me with dread. My carefully turned pots ruined by sloppy, graceless protrusions that didn’t hold up as I’d usually over-pulled them. One day, when studying on the DCCI pottery course, we were issued with the daunting challenge of pulling a whole series of handles of different lengths and styles. The finished straps would need to be carefully laid out onto a ware board that was covered in drawn dimensions, targets we had to fill. Beyond length…

Laura Crosland Ceramics on Instagram: "I thought I would try to capture the hand position that I use to pull and shape a handle. I put my hand in to the position shown in the video, I find it very useful to make the edges narrower. The thumb and forefinger pinch the edge of the handle. . . . . #pottery #studiopottery #ceramics #ceramicart #art #contemporaryceramics #wheelthrown #maker #madeincornwall #mug #wip #ceramicsuk #handlepulling #britishstudiopottery #claylife #workinprogress…

Pottery West / Catherine+Matt+Luna too on Instagram: "And this is how the handles are attached to the mug bodies - the tapered mugs which I shared in my last post. ‘Blanks’ are pulled, the part where the handle will be attached is scored and slipped (with clay and water), and then the handle is secured and pulled to shape. It’s fine, fiddly work and does take some time to perfect. #ceramics #pottery #potteryartstudio #keramik #clay #apotterslife #potteryhacks #potteryhandles"

Mäe Ceramics on Instagram: "This is how I make all my handles for my cups. Years ago I used to pull them, until I kind of realized that the sharp energy to my pieces deserved a more squared handle, and I worked out this lovely efficient technique using a slab. . . . . . #pottery #ceramics #howtomakehandles #potteryvideo #instapottery #stoneware #potterywheel"
