The younger brother of Saint Basil the Great, excellent rhetorician Saint Gregory Bishop of Nyssa (4th cent) requested the Creed be composed, in order to reaffirm the faith and defend it from heresy. He also actively fought against Arians (believed Jesus was only God, not human), slanders about Virgin Mary or considering her part of God, and ensured the correct worship of Arabian and Palestinian churches.
