Sojourner Truth, African American evangelist and reformer who applied her religious fervor to the abolitionist and women’s rights movements. Obeying a supernatural call to ‘travel up and down the land,’ she sang, preached, and debated throughout the eastern and midwestern U.S.

A former slave, Sojourner Truth became an outspoken advocate for abolition, temperance, and civil and women’s rights in the nineteenth century. Learn more at womenshistory.org.

When the former slave stood up to speak at an 1851 convention, her speech had no name — but now it’s known by a rallying refrain that she may not have even uttered.

Sojourner Truth (1797‑1883) was an African American evangelist, abolitionist, women’s rights activist, author who was born into slavery. After escaping to freedom in 1826, Truth traveled the country preaching about abolitionism and equal rights.
