At first glance, red oak gives off a slightly rosy hue and has a more pronounced grain pattern, especially when left unstained, whereas white oak has a slightly grayish tone and a more subtle grain pattern.  With the right stain color, you’ll be surprised to see the differences between the two are nearly indistinguishable.
