Linux distros - what is the difference, which one should I choose?
Caution, VERY long post.
With more and more simmers looking into linux lately, I’ve been seeing the same questions over and over again: Which distro should I choose? Is distro xyz newbie-friendly? Does this program work on that distro?
So I thought I’d explain the concept of “distros” and clear some of that up.
Getting back to this question @cindysimblr
I am currently running the newest version of SimPE via Lutris.
I install the dependencies there by clicking on the arrow next to the wine glass in Lutris and then selecting Winetricks. This opens a new window where I select “Install an application”.
It opens a window where I simply hit “cancel”. This opens another window where I select “Install a Windows DLL or component”. This is where you have to select your dependencies (usually SimPE will give you an error message with tips on which dependencies are missing, otherwise check install directions if the creator has mentioned any dependencies such as .NET/dotnet - this goes for programs other than SimPE too!). Select all the dependencies you need (sometimes some googling or trial and error is needed), hit okay and wait for it to install. There will be error messages, but you can ignore those.
For anyone else interested in getting to run SimPE, @cindysimblr actually commented this yesterday:
And tadaaa:
Works for me! Just keep in mind that SimPE might have a weird quirk on Linux where you’ll have to right click on entries to open them in plugin view below. This is one thing I haven’t been able to “fix”, but tbh I don’t feel like tinkering with that because it’s really just a matter of habit lol
There is another weird quirk where SimPE gives me an error about an unsupported image type when I open the program:
But if I just click “ok” like four times, it disappears and the program works normally. Not sure what that’s about.
