Thursday, October 15: Jonathan Strange [x]
-
Carefully he took something out of his coat-pocket. It was a box, the colour of heartache, about the size of a snuff box but a little longer. He whispered to himself, “A man cannot help his training.”*
—
*At the engravers’ house in Spitalfields in the early spring of 1816, Strange had told Childermass, “One can never help one’s training, you know…”
Childermass had several careers before he became Mr Norrell’s servant and adviser. His first was as a highly talented child pick-pocket. His mother, Black Joan, had once managed a small pack of dirty, ragged child-thieves that had worked the towns of the East Riding in the late 1770s.

JSAMN Character Day: Jonathan Strange
Two magicians shall appear in England.
The first shall fear me; the second shall long to behold me;
The first shall be governed by thieves and murderers; the second shall conspire at his own
destruction;
The first shall bury his heart in a dark wood beneath the snow, yet still feel its ache;
The second shall see his dearest possession in his enemy’s hand.
The first shall pass his life alone; he shall be his own gaoler;
The second shall tread lonely roads, the storm above his head, seeking a dark tower upon a high hillside. - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke.With thanks to @grandecaps for the screencaps.

Well I didn’t even ship them when I first watched the TV series. It’s entirely the fault of the internet, as with lots of things ;-) I started reading fics on AO3 and the kink meme and the more I read, the more hooked I became. By the time I’d finished the book, I was quite heavily influenced by all the fics etc, so they just became cemented in my head.
I like the way that they both have very different personality types and come from very different backgrounds/have very different life experiences, but not only do they both have magic (and Christian names of course) in common, magic is their life…Ahah, the internet is evil! ;) I still remember accidentally reading my first slash ff and thinking …what the hell is this? And then someone linked to a very good written fic and i totally fell for the characters (that was Due South btw). So yeah… i totally get it. :) Also for Childermass/Segundus there’s a whole post-canon world to explore.

Day 2: Jonathan Strange
It’s Jonathan’s day! Release your sand horses but, please, keep your p********s hidden away somewhere. We wouldn’t want to upset him.

You know, I don’t know why I don’t ship Childermass and Strange. Maybe it’s because (other than that one time where Strange calls Childermass ‘magician’ and Childermass goes all gooey-eyed and smiley) I haven’t found any moments where they’ve had much romantic/sexual tension?Or maybe it’s because I ship Strange with Arabella too much to ship him with anyone else?….Well..FWIK there are people who ships characters that never had screen time together (like…Mycroft/Lestrade from Sherlock) ahah. As for me i’ve started shipping Childermass/Strange since Childers saying “Let the man do his trick.” in ep 2 ….and also Strange clearly wants Childers for himself, he even said so. ;)
I’ve thought of that … Strange/Arabella is such a strong “canon” ship it’s almost impossible to dismiss. Infact i ship them too but in my headcanon Strange is more interested in magic than anything else. A bit like Segundus, i think. And I’m rambling. Sorry. =)

I actually wrote a whole essay about this a while ago! You can find it here.The short answer is: I like them both as characters, and they’re both very pretty (in the TV series) so I thought “Why the hell not?” But then I accidentally consumed so many fanworks that, for me, this whatevs-why-not crack pairing has now become an OTP. Whoops.Oh thank you! I really enjoyed your essay and I definitely agree with some points you made there. :)
I do get why people ship them… i just don’t get why more people don’t ship Childermass/Strange. ;)
