Air pollution is becoming a global health challenge, affecting millions of lives. Although many of these pollutants have been identified, this paper is reviewing the established link between air pollution and neurodegenerative disease due to the increase in cases of neurodegenerative disease in middle-and low-income countries like Nigeria. This article reviewed the establishment of a possible relationship between air pollution and neurodegenerative diseases in Nigeria and Africa. Different literature sources were reviewed to identify the sources of air pollution, determine the level of awareness among citizens on the effects of air pollution, know the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases in air-polluted areas, life expectancy in such areas, existing diseases caused by air pollution, and their relationship with neurodegenerative diseases. Available literature on heavy metal pollutants in the brains of animal models from different zones of Nigeria and evidence of neurodegeneration in different animal species was also reviewed. In conclusion, one major setback is that there is no specific data on the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases in major air-polluted areas in Nigeria, hence, the need for awareness to alert occupants and citizens to neurodegenerative diseases and their connection with air pollution. It is also advised that the government implement steps to solve these difficulties, such as the employment of biodegradation and bioremediation in the removal of contaminants.

Moreover, there is a paucity of knowledge on the mechanisms of action of sesame and other phytoestrogens in male reproductive tracts. However, most works on phytoestrogens have focused on iso- flavones and lignans from soy-based andflaxseed meals Sesame plant is an annual herbaceous oil seed plant known to man since the dawn of civilization with all its parts usefully consumed as staple food and has lots of benefits in folk''s medicine in Africa and Asia for thousands of years now. This book gives insight into the beneficial impacts such as sperm enhancing and improving performance qualities inherent in sesame leaves phytoestrogenic-lignans consumption on the male reproductive organs. In addition, the mechanisms respon...

Methods: Fifteen female mice weighing between 20-25g were randomly divided into three groups with each group comprising of five mice. Obesity was induced by giving the test animals progesterone (10ml/kgbw) subcutaneously at the dorsal neck region. The groups were divided as Group A-obesity controlled + diluent (10 ml/kgbw), B-obese induced +Low dose IGE (5ml/kg bw) and C-obesity induced + high dose IGE (10 ml/kg bw). After 14 days of treatments, blood samples were collected centrifuged and lipid profile levels Cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Triglyceride concentrations were estimated in the serum. The liver, peri-ovarian fat, ovary and uterus were removed from each of the mice and weighed with a sensitive balance and liver prepared for histological examinations and evaluation. Results: Preliminary phytochemical analysis of the extract revealed the presence of glycosides. Obesity induction caused some fatty changes in the liver hepatocytes and the IGE treatment caused reduction of the fat globules around the hepatocyte with focal necrosis. The cholesterol and triglyceride level was higher in the low dose IGE treated but does not differ significantly from the high dose IGE treated and control (P<0.05). Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of Irvingia gabonensis at doses studied caused a reduction in the body weight in mice which is very obvious at the low dose, while the lipid profile and the blood parameters were not affected. Hence, it may be a safe herb at doses considered. The extracts caused a significant change in the liver histology which was evident by reduction of fat globules and focal necrosis, swelling of cells.

It may account for one of the factors responsible for increasing male infertility in Ilorin, Nigeria. Objective: To find out the incidence, age distribution clinical presentation, duration before presentation and the occurrence of various Histopathological subtypes of testicular tumours in Ilorin. Design: A retrospective study. Setting: A teaching hospital (University of Ilorin) Patients: Testicular biopsies were done on patients presenting at the hospital with suspected cases of malignancies. Materials and Mehtods: All consecutives cases of testicular malignancies diagnosed in the department of pathology, university of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, during the period of thirteen years (1990-2003) were included in this study. Relevant clinical details such as age, clinical presentation and side of involvement of the testis were also recorded. The slide preparations of this sample were retrieved and reviewed. Result: During the span of thirteen years (1990-2003), testicular cancers accounted for 0.05% of all sample received and 0.14% of the male biopsies. Most of the diagnosed cases were in the first decades of life and are mainly germ cells tumours of which yolk sac tumours are commonest subtypes. Conclusion: Incidence of testicular cancers is still low in this environment and may not account for major contributory factors in male infertility in Ilorin.

The highest ethanol productivity (16.9 g/[L • h]) occurred at T = 3 h, K = 1.6 h-1 , and M = 1300 g. In addition, productivity was affected by both M (for T = 3 and 4 h) and K (for T = 3 h) and varied inversely with T under any value fixed for M and K. By the quadratic regression multivariable analysis method, equations were determined to estimate ethanol yield and productivity as function of the variables studied (T, K, and M).

Intensive studies on extracts and biologically active compounds isolated from medicinal plants ha... more Intensive studies on extracts and biologically active compounds isolated from medicinal plants have doubled in the last decade worldwide. However, as a result of paucity of knowledge and folkloric claim on the effectiveness of sesame leaves in infectious disease treatments, we aimed to determine the synergistic antimicrobial activity of essential oils and lignans present in the crude leaves extracts of Sesame radiatum and Sesame indicum. Ethanolic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of both leaves were studied for their in-vitro synergistic antimicrobial activity against both Gram positive and Gram negative microorganisms , and Yeast using Agar diffusion method. The GC-MS phytochemical screening of methanolic extract showed that the major compounds in essential oils are of carboxylic acids and phenolic groups especially, the most potent antioxidants known to man like sesamol, sesamolin and sesamin among others. Methanolic and ethanolic extracts have broad spectrum antimicrobial effect against all the tested pathogenic microorganisms except Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus respectively, while the aqueous extract exhibited inhibitory activity on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Candida albicans. The result confirmed the folkloric claims of the antimicrobial effectiveness of locally consumed sesame leaves extracts especially against bacterial and common skin infection in many areas of Nigeria .

The development of a new dietary adjunct with a novel natural antioxidant impact on diabetes mell... more The development of a new dietary adjunct with a novel natural antioxidant impact on diabetes mellitus with prevention of its long term deleterious effect on the male fertility in general has been increasingly expressed in recent time. Hence, we aim to evaluate the effects of aqueous extract of Sesame radiatum leaves on adult male Sprague Dawley rats’ testis using unbiased stereological, biochemical and hormonal studies. Thirty adult male rats were divided into three groups of 10 rats each. The treated groups; 1 and 2 received 28.0 and 14 mg/kg bwt of aqueous extract of sesame leaves via oral garvage, respectively, while the control group received equal volume of 0.9% (w/v) normal saline per day for 6 weeks. Serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone and blood glucose were assayed. In addition five microns of uniformly random transverse sections of processed testicular tissues were equally analyzed using an un-biased stereological study. The result showed that the mean pe...

Only 60.9% of respondents were familiar with this new emerging concept of tele-medicine / tele-health in the health care system. Although, 50% of health workers had expressed concern about the ethical and medico-legal consideration of tele medicine practice, this was irrespective of their socio-religious background. The principal factors weighing in favour of willingness to use tele-health services were knowledge of telehealth applications (28.1%); perception of tele-health benefits (14.1%), reduced barriers to tele-health care among others. Most of the respondents believed that tele-health would enhance direct access to health care services (23.4%), improve quality of care (14.1%) among others. It is desirable to offer telemedicine to patients especially for emergency and chronic medical conditions.

The effects of combined administration of ethinylestradiol (E) and testosterone (T) were studied ... more The effects of combined administration of ethinylestradiol (E) and testosterone (T) were studied in castrated Sprague-Dawley rats. The hormones E and T were administered three times weekly on alternate days, subcutaneously in the inguinal region for 4 weeks, 30 days after castration. E-treated animals received injections of 3 g/kg body weight (B.W), T-treated animals received 30 mg/kg B.W., combined testosterone and ethinylestradiol (T & E)-treated animals received injections of 30 mg/kg B.W. of T and 2 g/kg B.W. of E. Control animals-were in two groups, castrated and intact both received injections of 5 ml/kg B.W. of normal saline. i) The T-treated prostate weight was significantly higher than in castrated control (P<0.05). (ii) The E-alone treated prostate weight was not significantly different from castrated control (P b0.05). iii) The combined T and E-treated prostate weight was significantly higher than in castrated control (P<0.05). Morphological findings: in the combined T and Etreated, the amount of connective tissue was well marked, there was an increase in the thickness of the epithelium and the size of the oval acini, relative to T-alone treated or the intact control. E-alone did not elicit any appreciable effect on the prostate, different from the castrated control. This finding demonstrates a synergistic effect of E on the prostate when administered along with T and also suggests that E may be involved in the pathophysiology of the abnormal enlargement of prostate gland.

Since, there is a relative dearth of knowledge on adolescents who face unique and challenging economics, health and education problems in our society. Data on the socio-demographic characteristics, prevalence and knowledge towards STD including HIV/AIDS, prevalence of sexual abuse practice/sexual behaviour, family planning awareness and acceptance including abortion practice were sorted out using self structured questionnaires and administered to 60% of student's population using a stratified random sampling technique. 55.8% lived with both parents. While, 50.3% of the mothers had basic secondary school qualifications, 72.4% of them are traders. 61.5% had sex education were from misinformed friends/peers while 51% had no basic knowledge about sexual behavioral practice and attitude towards STDs/AIDS (HIV). STD has a prevalence of 34 and 41% of boys used condoms for preventing STI/HIV transmission and unwanted pregnancies. One out of every five sexually active teenagers has experienced forced sex, especially among the circumcised girls who were more sexually active than the uncircumcised girls. 60% of girls between ages of 12 and 18 years had more than one unsafe abortion with severe vaginal bleeding (haemorrhage) as the chief complication. However, 65% of the girls did abortion for fear of leaving school and financial hardship as the reasons.
