Fillers are necessary in cabinetry because 1 you need to pull the cabinets away from the trim so that the doors and drawers don’t hit the trim when you open them and 2 no almost no space has perfect walls and you need a little give to fit the cabinets in the space. The fillers allow us to trim them to follow the wall angle and curves and still have a tight fit to the wall. We usually shoot for a 1.5” wide filler. There are some exceptions like with a fridge that is against a wall. Sometimes they require 3-5” of filler to open properly. But for general fillers, we try to keep it as small as possible. Usually you see extra large fillers with spaces that are not doing semi or custom cabinets.
