Create 3 boxes with 4 inch tops and 4 inch bottoms. And yes I had to teach 1st graders how to use the ruler! Then use the ruler to create horizontal and vertical lines inside your boxes. Draw a heart inside each of the 3 boxes. Color in the hearts first and then the backgrounds using a repeating checker board patten. You could have themes such as warm and cool or complementary colors. Or make it random colors! When you are finished coloring in all the spaces, flick black watered down tempera…

Jim Dine Radiating Hearts Here is another idea I found on Pinterest. I just changed it a bit to fit the needs of my kindergartners. I introduced the lesson with showing pictures of Jim Dine's heart paintings. I then showed the children how to make a paper heart out of construction paper. They glued the heart onto the center of a 9" x 9" white multi-media piece of paper. They added a highlight with oil pastels and then continued to add various lines around their heart. This took one, 50…

Kindergarten completed their exploding hearts this week, so it's time to create something new! I thought it'd be fun for them to learn how to cut out a heart, and use patterns, lines, and paint to create a work of art around their heart! Materials: 12x12 90 lb Sax paper 4x4"red tru ray paper Crayola oil pastels Jack Richeson Semi-Moist tempera cakes I started out showing them how to cut out a heart from folded paper. I tell them to draw an ear shape or the top part of the number 2 to do so…

Mosaics is a familiar art form for kids and the physical act of piecing shapes together to form a beautiful pattern is filled with learning opportunities. This lesson is easily adaptable for older kids by making the heart shape larger and requiring more complex patterns, but it can be simplified as well. My theme this year is 'Use What I have' so for my Art to Remember project this year I decided to use some oil pastel, bright and bold scrapbook paper, and some fun techniques I was reminded of this summer after spending time with Lauralee Chambers or you might know her as @2art.chambers. Mrs. Chambers is a genius. I went to her website to be inspired and sure enough, I ran across this post. It was perfect. While at the Tennessee Arts Academy this summer Lauralee showed her 'students' how to…

So this lesson was an extension to a texture and variety painting lesson I did with my first graders. The way that my scheduling went.. I had an extra day with some of my first grade classes.. so we looked at some Jim Dine artwork... then went to work on our own versions! Students folded a piece of 9"x9" drawing paper in half (both ways), drew a heart in each square, and then went to town doing crayon rubbings and drawing pattern (a reinforcement of what we did earlier in the week). Once…
