I know there are sturdier ways to do it for LARP and such but I am a cosplayer, I made these with butted joints and am not fighting anyone in my armor so we good. I haven't had any fall off so far - if you close the gap enough you'll be fine to wear it around con.  I chose to use metal as I wanted an authentic-looking  armor with the same kinda feel and movement as on the show. It is a bit heavy but I feel SO comfy wearing it. The weight is balanced and I'm happy walking around con an entire day in it. I chose to make them to get the size I wanted and it was a cheaper option for me after looking online.  I used a wooden dowel. Does it wear down eventually? Yes.
