The P51 is one of the most iconic aircraft of WWII and beyond but it initially struggled as a altitude fighter because of the Allison V-1710 Supercharger. When paired with a RR Merlin engine it became a formidable foe in the skies. This is primarily because of the two-stage supercharger that was attached to the crankshaft. The low stage was used till about 19,000 feet (Depending on SN) and the High stage was used up above that. It could produce enough power to give the aircraft excellent handling at these altitudes up through 30,000 feet!
