Musicians don’t get any more legendary than John Lennon. The Beatle was born on October 9, 1940, and left an indelible mark on music and the lives of his legions of fans before his tragic killing in 1980. On what would have been his 73rd birthday, look back on Lennon’s brilliant, but short, life, ahead.

At the time, it seemed that The Rolling Stones’ Rock And Roll Circus was just a bizarre exercise in Sixties fancy dress. In the end the event, held in Wembley, London, turned out to be ambitious and strange.

The iconic figure in music, and an architect of rock 'n roll, has died at the age of 80.
