Escherichia coli productora de shigatoxines

L'Escherichia coli productora de shigatoxines (en anglès:Shiga Toxine Escherichia Coli, STEC) és un bacteri productor de potents toxines[1] i responsable d'algunes intoxicacions alimentàries[2][3] causants de colitis hemorràgiques[4] i -en casos greus- de la síndrome hemolítica i urèmica,[5][6] la principal causa d'insuficiència renal aguda en nens petits.[7] Es coneixen múltiples soques del bacteri, no totes elles amb la mateixa virulència.[8][9] El seu reservori principal són els remugants,[10] encara que s'han registrat diversos casos d'infeccions humanes associades al contacte amb ocells, gossos o cavalls.[11]

Aquest microorganisme es coneix també sota altres noms, com enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC),[12] Shiga-like toxin-producing E. coli (SLTEC o STEC),[13] hemolytic uremic syndrome–associated enterohemorrhagic E. coli (HUSEC) i verocytotoxin o verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC).[14]

Shiga fa referència a Kiyoshi Shiga[15] qui descobrí Shigella dysenteriae[16] una de les espècies que formen el gènere Shigella.[17]
