Cherts of Late Jurassic – Albian age, intercalated in pelagic limestones at Meganissi Island (Ion... more Cherts of Late Jurassic – Albian age, intercalated in pelagic limestones at Meganissi Island (Ionian Sea, western Greece) were studied. These SiO 2-rich materials were deposited in the Ionian intra platform basin and their presence indicates that this basin was under the CCD level. In the field, the cherts occur as bedded and nodular, with red and greyish colours. The microscopic study showed that they are composed of cryptocrystalline quartz, microcrystalline quartz, chalcedony and mega-quartz. The powder X-ray diffraction and SEM-EDS studies verified the dominance of quartz, a fact proving that the cherts of Late Jurassic – Albian are of increased diagenetic grade. The chemical analyses by ICP-OES/MS showed that the investigated cherts have very high SiO 2 content and significant amounts of CaO. Their biogenic origin is supported by the presence of characteristic fossils (radiolaria) and distinct bulk geochemical fingerprints. REE geochemical diagrams indicated that these cherts were clearly deposited in a marine environment. Moreover, paleo-redox marine conditions, in conjunction with further diagenetic and epigenetic processes, are most likely the factors caused enrichment in LREE and an evident Ce negative geochemical anomaly (Ce/Ce* av. 0.52).

The research focuses on the lithic assemblage of Skorba, a late Neolithic site of Malta, and local chert rock sources. This assemblage is mainly consisting of chert tools and artefacts, but the origin of the raw materials remains inconclusive. Although chert outcrops are reported on Malta, they have yet to be investigated and their petrological characteristics are unknown. Moreover, it was always assumed that nonlocal chert material has been only imported from Sicily. This, however, remains at a theoretical level and elaborate provenance research is necessary to test it.
