The most tragic aspect of Alucard's character is his relation with humanity. Throughout the Castlevania series, humanity has been the cause of a greater part of his loss. Now this humanity could be Alucard's individual humanity or mankind as a whole. The loss of his mother was a result of the most dangerous facet of humanity- fear. His own humanity, on the other hand, led to him emerging as a soldier who had to cross blades with his own father as that was the right and noble thing to do. His humanity made him choose between being his father's son or his mother's son, betraying one parent either way. Choosing to side with his father would have been easier, giving into the maws of vengeance would have been easier. And it wouldn't really have been 'giving into his vampire instincts', because the show portrays the inherently evil nature of mankind time and time again. So him choosing to seek revenge by his father's side would have been entirely human. But he took the path that would hurt more but embodied the goodness in the world. He willingly chose to embrace the virtuous aspects of humanity and fight against the vices of it. However, this decision has been a double-edged sword for him, making him bleed (literally) more often than not. The betrayal by Sumi and Taka is a prominent example of it. Alucard could have chosen to stop believing in the good in the world after it, and he nearly did, but he could never completely become the Alucard. He would always be Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes, son of Lisa Tepes, a woman of science, and Vlad Dracula Tepes, a man who loved his wife and son more than anything. Hatred has always tried to dig its claws into Adrian, but Love has always been the shield that protected him- the memory of love from his parents, love from Trevor and Sypha, love from Greta, love from the orphaned children, and love from the numerous other people that he met in his life as time passed. So Alucard remaining good throughout the series is a tribute that he upholds to the memory of everyone he loved and who loved him back, and a tribute to Adrian Tepes, who is more human than any human on earth.
