Learning this was an intentional genocide changed me.

I know most of those following me know this, but just to make it super clear. An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger/the Great Famine) was a deliberate genocide of the Irish people. There was enough food grown in Ireland to make sure everyone was alive and healthy and survived. Instead it was exported, sent to England and elsewhere for profit while men, women, and children starved in the streets. While the English landlords fucked off and evicted starving families who couldn’t afford rent. While babies were too weak to cry and died at the side of the road.

They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. And we owe so much thanks to the other oppressed peoples, in particular the Choctaw Nation and the Masai, who sent money and grain to us.

Let me repeat that. The Choctaw Nation who had just gone through the Trail of Tears sent us money to try save Irish lives. It’s led to an understanding between Irish people and Native American tribes, most recently when we donated to the Navajo and Hopi fundraisers for COVID-19 relief, because while it may be a different tribe, Irish people will never forget those who helped us and we’ll help back.

The entire population of the island is less than seven million people. We’re still a million less on this island than pre famine. And it’s not that long ago. My grandmother’s grandparents lived through it. We’ve told the stories, it literally changed the DNA of the country. We have a national fear of renting, because so many people were evicted. People joke about Irish people always offering loads of food, but it’s because there’s that cultural memory of not being able to.

They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. We will not let them take our lives, we will not let them take our language. We lost so much, but we will not lose it all.

This is why I get so angry when people say “it was the potato famine, it was because of monoculture/microbes.”

Nope. The potatoes were the only thing Irish people were allowed to fucking eat, because as pointed out, the rest of the crops they were growing were for their landlords to ship to England. So when the one “worthless” crop they were allowed to eat rotted in the field, the English crown, empire, landlords, all shrugged and carried on. People starved to death lying next to productive fields.

do you ever not write for so long that you’re almost afraid to? like what if I’m dumb now

You just gotta unclog the pipe. Are you dumb now? No. The water was sitting stagnant because you were busy doing other things (100% fine btw). If any ‘dumb’ got in the water then it will quickly leave once you let the water start flowing again. Go get all the stupid out into a doc that doesn’t matter. Even several of them. It might take a good while, especially if you’re returning to writing after years or after a period of intense burnout, or both (waves). But you’re just rusty, and letting that stop you will only ensure you stay stuck! Go forth and write some nonsense!

this applies to art as well btw

Had a conversation with a non-Ukrainian friend today that really stuck with me. They were talking about visiting and casually mentioned maybe finding a cheap flight. And I just… Freezed for a moment before saying, “The airspace is closed.”

They genuinely asked, “Why?”

It caught me off guard. I forget sometimes how easy it is for people outside of Ukraine to not know what’s going on here. But the reality is, we’re still in constant danger. Air raid sirens, missile attacks, sleepless nights—it hasn’t stopped.

I don’t want to be aggressive about it, but I do want to remind people: Ukraine is still fighting, still struggling, still suffering. Please don’t forget about us.

✨You are not a failure for having writers block.

✨You haven’t “let your audience down” for not updating in a while.

✨You aren’t a bad person for writing about problematic content.

✨You can always take a break from your writing, even if it’s for a significant amount of time.

✨You can always leave a project, work on something else, and come back to it later.

✨You aren’t a “bad writer” for only having a few projects.

✨You aren’t a “bad writer” for only having a lot of projects.

✨You aren’t a “bad writer” if you decide to only write about things that are important to you.

✨You don’t owe anyone continuous updates for a project.

You are a writer, and that’s enough.

I’ve noticed more and more in public bathrooms that people skip the handwash and just take a squirt of hand sanitizer from wall dispensers on the way out. hand sanitizer is NOT effective against most things that come out of your ass. i cannot stress this enough. i’m begging y'all. please. please please please please please use the soap.

i’m out here immunosupressed fighting for my life to not get naturally selected while people around me touch a public toilet handles and walk back to their tables to immediately eat a burger

Thank you for bringing this up! Many hand sanitizers and household cleaners proudly claim to “Kill 99.99% of germs.”

In fact, this does not mean that the product kills 99.99% of all germs known to exist.

It means that, during product testing in a controlled environment, the product killed 99.99% of the germs it was specifically tested against. As you might imagine, Lysol isn’t testing its kitchen disinfectant spray against millions and millions of unique microbes.

In the U.S., labeling laws usually require that companies actually identify somewhere else on the label which germs are being tested and killed. Next time you see a “kills 99.99% of germs” label, check out the rest of the label, and you’ll find the small print which specifies that it kills 99.9% of one type of flu, or Covid, or E. Coli, etc. This is why many labels even include an asterisk, i.e.: “Kills 99.99% of Germs!*” Look for the companion asterisk elsewhere on the label for more info.

There are different kinds of germs, like Viruses; Bacteria, Fungi, and Protozoans.

The way we kill these germs to prevent infections varies based on the germs’ structure. Essentially, we need different “weapons” (cleaning methods) to fight different microbes. A product that kills Flu Viruses and E. Coli can’t necessarily destroy Norovirus or Giardia.

No product is effective against every type of germ, even common germs which regularly cause illness in households and communities.

Hand washing is effective against more germs, not only because it can destroy germs which hand sanitizer cannot, but because it simply washes them off your hands.

More on the many personal, community, & global benefits of hand washing.

People used to comment on web comics.

People used to comment on fanfiction.

People used to comment on fanart.

People used to comment on OCs.

I hate “content” culture.

I hate “consuming content” and scrolling immediately to the next thing.

People used to be excited about the art that other people created.

People used to want to share that excitement with creators.

I hate this future.

Once someone tagged art that I made with “woah” and I think about it at least once a week. Someone else said “oh neat” once. Someone else WROTE A WHOLE DAMN POEM IN THE COMMENTS. Anyways even just one word can change how someone sees their art. You don’t even have to think about it too hard. You could put a keyboard smash and I’d probably cry from joy.

I’m also trying hard to interact more, I understand that it’s hard to break away from opening your phone and being in Content Consumption Mode.

I honestly hadn’t stopped to think about this until I saw this post… I used to think people would get annoyed if they were notified everytime someone posted a comment on their art. I never thought about it being like fanfiction and that they might appreciate comments. Frick, that means I’m part of the problem on here. Thats gotta change.

Every tag, every comment, every reblog with some kind of reaction/opinion or even just one word. All of these things are precious to creators!

I spent countless hours reading and rereading tags full of love people left under my art. All the people i could gift a laugh to or even inspire with something I made mean more to me then you could ever know.

It’s what makes me proud of my art!

And to think that you could have enjoyed my art in silence and I would have never known.

A very special shout out to the person who tagged “these mcgriddles make me want to shit so bad” on fanart in 2013 I think about you once a day

catnippackets:

I don’t remember if I read this somewhere or had this thought myself but if you’re ever facing an optional situation that requires you having to go somewhere and you’re thinking “ugh I don’t wanna go…I just wanna stay home…” a really useful question to ask yourself is “do I not want to be at the destination or do I just not want to exert the effort to travel there?” because for me at least, most of the time it’s the latter…it’s really just the hassle of getting there that makes me not want to go…and thinking about it, like that, I know I will be sad to miss out on whatever it is if I don’t go. because I have been, in the past. doesn’t matter if it’s a small thing or a big thing, either. “I don’t want to walk to the store but I really do want those groceries.” “I don’t want to contend with rush hour traffic but I do want to meet with my coworkers.” “I’m scared to travel by myself but I do want to go on that vacation.” don’t let your disdain for the commute make you miss out on something that you actually would genuinely enjoy doing. IT’LL BE WORTH IT.
