Frutiger was originally used for all airport signage and was created from 1968-1975.  The point of using one specific typography was to create a unified font which could be easily recognised and would build a sense of consistency in different contexts and countries. Originally Frutiger was used to convey this message across all international airports, however some airports now use Helvetica instead.
