The Stelae were built from 100 BC to the 300's AD. They mark the burial place of the king. Each king wanted a larger stelae than the last, the the oldest ones are the smallest. The last one built was the "Great Stelae," which measured 99 feet. All of the stelae were made from a single slab of rock, not with bricks. I am going to close out my Axum photos for now with a photo of Abba Pentalewon monastery, seen from nearby Abba Liquanos monastery's hill. The photo leaves a lot to be desired from my conception, and I will be trying it again when I return, but I thought it a fitting cap-stone to the Axum section.

The Obelisk of Axum is a 1,700-year-old, 24-metres tall granite obelisk, weighing 160 tonnes, in the city of Axum in Ethiopia, erected during the 4th century A.D. by subjects of the Kingdom. In 1937, it was taken as war booty and moved to Rome by the Italians. Numerous attempts to return the stele, remained unsuccessful until an American-Ethiopian, Dr. Aberra Molla, threatened the Italian government with the option of raising the money on the Internet.
