Rootlets, what a fun word! Rootlets of the spinal cord are arranged so that one rootlet is on the ventral or anterior side - this one contains motor impulses leaving the spinal cord, and one rootlet is on the dorsal or posterior side - this one contains sensory impulses entering the spinal cord. That dorsal side has a swelling on it called the dorsal root ganglion, which houses the cell bodies of sensory neurons. It is super cute! A ganglion is a cluster of neurosomas outside the CNS wrapped in an epineurium continuous with that of the nerve. Bundles of nerve fibers lead into and out of the ganglion. The posterior root ganglion contains somas conducting signals from the peripheral sense organs toward the spinal cord. The anterior root in this picture is not part of the ganglion. A hand drawn sketch by Dr. Christensen from the University of Michigan Medical School for the laboratory sessions he conducted in the Medical Histology Course for first year medical students. The drawings were done with felt markers on a white board in the lab during the morning of the day a particular topic was being studied in the course. When the laboratory session began, the drawings were briefly discussed, and they could be seen by the students throughout the laboratory period. Download…
